The Virginia Air National Guard's 5th Tactical Fighter Wing (5TFW) is responsible for the aerial refueling and combat support mission of the USAF's Operation Neptune Spear air campaign in Afghanistan. On 9/11, the wing was activated as a result of the Defense Authorization Act of 2006, which authorizes federal funding to be used to purchasehips and aircraft equipped with refueling pods that could be used by F-15E Strike Eagles and A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft during deployments. The wing also received its first Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker on September 25, 2007. In fiscal year 2012, the 5TFW flew supersonic tanker missions from Joint Base McGuire-Dix in New Jersey using Boeing 747s as tanker planes. In fiscal year 2013, they will use Lockheed Martin C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. The wing has been providing aerial refueling support for Operation Neptune Spear since October 2009 when it became operational flying the McDonnell Douglas MD-80H Stratotanker; however this was only a training squadron at RAF Fairford until February 1st 2010 when it took over operations from No 3 Squadron RAF based at Netheravon Airfield. The 5TFW carries out an estimated 350 sorties per month with its four McDonnell Douglas MD-88H Stratotankers conducting flight sorties from bases in Germany and Italy supplemented by two Boeing 767Fs providing airlift for ground forces during strikes in Afghanistan. TheKC-135 is able to provide up to 17 hours of fuel per mission which can be extended up to 24 hours if necessary through long range ordnance delivery using dispensers on each bomber seat; however these dispensers are not popular with pilots because they need time to mentally map out where they want their bombs landed so they know where all munitions will go before release In late 2009/early 2010 USAF began phase 2 procurement of 8" Mk 46 Mod 0 EOTSAM(R) AGM Bombs Dropped from KC135 Aircraft w/ Guidance From USMC - This increase would allow USAF more flexibility when conducting airstrikes against Taliban targets due to improved targeting capabilities provided by Navy Sea Sparrow Missiles
