The military was present in Colonial Heights from its earliest days. The first permanent English settlement in the area was established in 1624 by Captain John Smith and his men, who named the land "Chesterfield." The military played a significant role throughout the early years of Virginian history. In 1775, General James K. Polk led an army against British forces at Yorktown. As a result of this battle, America gained independence from Great Britain and began their own journey to democracy. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson led an army into Virginia to invade Kentucky and drive out the Federalists. This event helped solidify Virginian support for the Union during the Civil War. Since then, the military has played an important role in Virginian society. Today, there are over 20 military installations located in Northern Virginia alone – including one in Colonial Heights that is home to both the Army's Infantry Brigade Combat Team 1st Battalion (Light), 4th Marines and Airborne Brigade Combat Team 2nd Squadron (Airborne) – as well as numerous Reserve units across the region. These deployments help ensure that Virginians have access to quality education, health care, and other benefits required for a free society. 1) The Earl of Chesterfield served as Colonel-in-Chief of Militia Forces stationed at Fortress Monroe from 1764 until his death in 1768; he also served as Commandant of Fort Prince George from 1768 until his death on 13 October 1768; 2) Colonel John Todd commanding 205 Regiment Foot Erected at Newport News January 25th [1784]; 3) Colonel Charles Lee commanding Light Dragoons February 14th [1787] moved thence with Third Corps March 12th through April 9th [1789]; 4) Colonel William Byrd commanding 1st Cavalry November 8eenth [1792] started service with Seventh Cavalry December 5th under command of Brigadier General Edmund Randolph; 5) Lieutenant Commander Nicholas Biddle serving under Commodore John Wright commanded Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Dockyard when it became known as Portsmouth Navy Yard May 10TH 1801 ] 6) Commodore Nicholas Biddle appointed Commandant September 15TH 1802 resigned due to ill health 7) Commodore Nicholas Biddle reappointed March 3rd 1803 after being impeached 8 ) Commodore Nicholas Biddle resigned again effective July 21ST 1804 9 ) On November 15TH 1800 Admiral John Woolridge ordered all naval stores at Norfolk be destroyed pursuant to section 24(a)(2)(B)(iii) of Warrants issued by President Thomas Jefferson on October 31ST 1800 10 ) On January 15TH 1801 Rear Admiral David Dixon ordered all naval stores at Norfolk be destroyed pursuant to section 24(a)(2)(B)(iii), we order destruction except quantities necessary for our defense

As a result, many businesses and residences were built in what is now Colonial Heights during the early 1800s. Many residents of Colonial Heights adopted British culture during this time period. For example, many households used English instead of native languages when communicating with family and friends back home. also Many shops and restaurants operated out of English-speaking kitchens or storefronts throughout the community. However, some residents did attempt to learn local Sign Language while living within colonial boundaries because communication between natives and non-natives was still limited at this point in history
There were many armies that fought during the Revolutionary War. The British Army was one of the most powerful armies in the world. However, they were not alone. The Colony of Colonial Heights, Virginia was a small village located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, right on the borders of present-day West Virginia and Maryland. The town began as a small cluster of log cabins built by early colonists in 1754. By 1800, the population had grown to around 100 residents. During its early years, Colonial Heights was an agricultural outpost with many farms and gardens. In 1814, the British Crown gave land to many veterans of the American Revolution for free settlement in what is now West Virginia. This area became known as "New Hanover County." In 1776, when war broke out between Great Britain and America over independence from Britain, Colonial Heights sided with America and fought against British forces. After being evacuated from Philadelphia during the night of September 13-14th (see Battle of Germantown), some settlers decided to stay behind to protect their homes and furniture from looters who were roaming through Philadelphia looking for supplies for their war effort. Aftermath: As a result of this battle, General Howe ordered all civilian property within one mile (1 km) radius of Germantown burned down without giving any warning to either side. Many people who had remained behind were looted and/or destroyed while others managed to escape into nearby woods where they barricaded themselves until reinforcements could arrive. This event is often cited as one reason that led to increased violence between Patriot militiamen and Loyalist civilians during the later stages of the conflict; it also made it easier for British forces to move around freely without fear that they would be attacked or looted again.
