Roosevelt’s declaration that Jamestown should be designated as a National Historic Site! The area now known as Colonial Heights was once part of the Colony of Virginia. The original land grant for the colony was in 1607, and it grew rapidly in population over the next several years. In 1622, Governor Thomas Fairfax awarded a further grant to Sir William Berkeley. As this new grant extended well beyond the present-day city limits, many people from other parts of Virginia began moving to Colonial Heights to settle. By the end of 1624, there were more than 200 people living in Colonial Heights. During the early years of British rule in America, some colonists expressed their concerns about what might happen if they lost their freedom and became subjects of a powerful king or queen. Some believed that life under such conditions would be much harsher than under English rule. Accordingly, many colonists decided to stay put and protect their rights as free men. One group of supporters of independence soon formed themselves into a small militia called The Continental Congress. This committee planned and helped carry out several key attacks against British forces during the late 17th century – including an attempt on Parliament's building in 1775. In 1778, after several months of skirmishes with British troops at Smithfield Park near modern-day Reston Township, Colonel George Washington led an assault on Fort Frederick at Fort Hermonensee – resulting in a major victory for American Independence. After this event, many people from Colonial Heights moved closer to Mount Vernon to support America's new government and military efforts during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). After independence was won, many Virginians chose not to move back into colonial territory but rather live permanently outside Britain where they could continue practicing their religious beliefs undisturbed by official rulings from London erstwhile masters. This decision has been seen as one factor contributing to how quickly Richmond deteriorated economically following its surrender in 1781; however most residents who stayed did so because they felt that anything else would have been too dangerous or unstable inside Great Britain itself postwar context).
