Culpeper, Virginia is home to the oldest operational coffee shop in the United States. The first known Coffee House was established on October 16, 1751 by Captain John Smith and his men as a place for them to talk and drink coffee. It was located on present day Cedar Street. The Coffee House quickly became a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to gather and chat about all things coffee-related. In 1817,Captain John Smith's son, Colonel John Smith opened the Anderson Tavern in what is now downtown Culpeper. This spot became one of the most influential tourist destinations in the town. As America grew increasingly connected through railroads, travel took on new opportunities which resulted in more people visiting Culpeper each year. By 1868, Coffee House had closed its doors for good but its legacy will live on forever thanks to its many regulars who continue to visit today!

Culpeper is a small town located in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-MD-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Culpeper was founded in 1755 by Captain John Culpeper and his family after they arrived from Portsmouth, England. The original name for the town was "Newington." The Culpeper Creek Natural Preserve surrounds the town and contains over 2,500 acres (1,000 hectares) of forested land including oak woods, hickory forests, laurel woodlands and black cherry woods. The preserve also has a variety of waterfowl areas including white-tailed deer, duck hunting ponds and ramps. There are also several miles of hiking trails that include access to many creekside spots as well ashilltops and valleys. In addition to its natural resources, Culpeper offers a wide variety of cultural attractions such as museums such as the American Antiquarian Society Museum which houses more than 1 million items from around America; an annual agricultural show at nearby Herndon Fairgrounds; a three day music festival in early July called "Festival on Five," featuring world renown artists from all genres; events like arts festivals throughout the year; golf tournaments throughout the year; and much more!
