The United States Army deployed gift history in Fairfax, Virginia for the first time in 1889. The army set up a gift shop called the Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Fairfax County to distribute gifts to its troops stationed there. From then on, the army would send Christmas gifts to troops stationed all over the country. Over time, the army's gift shop became known as one of the most popular places to find military gifts. Gifts from different branches of the military were distributed throughout the county, and it was estimated that up to 50% of all items purchased at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Home were destined for soldiers stationed in Fairfax County. Gift history in Fairfax began with small donations from individuals who wanted to show their support for our service men and women. Over time, however, donation rates grew high enough that it became necessary for authorities to establish regulations governing how much could be donated per month. In 1912, donations were capped at $25 per person per month. This decision made sure that commanders had enough money available on hand each month so they could focus on larger projects rather than buying personal items for their troops. In 1949, when Operation Merry Christmas was announced by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara as part of his War Against Poverty initiative, donations reached an all-time high of $1 million dollars! As a result of this largesse, over 1 million military personnel received holiday presents during 1949 alone!

The Fairfax County, Virginia Army Garrison was founded on October 16, 1775. The first unit to be raised in the colony was the 5th Battalion of theirginia Regiment. The regiment served with distinction during the American Revolution and saw battle at Saratoga Springs, Yorktown, and Gettysburg. In 1881, when Fairfax County became a county within Virginia, the army garrison came under the jurisdiction of the newly created county government.
Fairfax, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 106,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and has a population of over 200,000 people as of 2019. The name Fairfax comes from "Forbeirge", meaning "hill or promontory" in Welsh. In 1755, Colonel John Forbeirge purchased land comprising present-day Fairfax from the Rappahannock Tribe for $5 per acre (approximately $140/acre at current prices). The first permanent settler in what is now Fairfax was Captains John Smith and James Cook who arrived in 1768 on HMS Dolphin with their families after traveling through North America and Europe. They were among the first Europeans to explore what is now Virginia Beach and Prince George's County. Nearby Camp Dunmore was founded by Randolph Churchill in 1775 as a military outpost during the American Revolution to support British General John Forbes's effort to capture Loudoun County from the Patriot forces under George Washington during that war. After his victory at Yorktown, Forbes turned around and marched back east rather than continue downriver to Loudoun Valley which would have been vulnerable to French attack. In 1851, two brothers named Samuel Morse bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of waterfront property on Chesapeake Bay side of town for $15 per acre (approximately $2 million/acre at current prices). Morse developed this into Arlington Station which became one of America's most important shipping points due to its flat bottomed channel that allowed large ships to dock without getting wet while passing through narrows near Alexandria Naval Base on Annapolis Bay before sailing up river for Wilmington or Baltimore or Philadelphia where they unloaded their cargo onto smaller vessels then took them home again via deep water passage across Hampton Roads which lay between Norfolk Island and southern Virginia In 1871 Notable men from Fairfax gathered together at Rockville School House for an ill-fated meeting called by local physician Drury Hennepin about a new method for manufacturing paper products using carbon dioxide instead of wood pulp In 1881 Robert Eberhart opened Hisland Cigar Store located on Main Street across from modern day RSMU University providing an early example of chain stores throughout the region Noteworthy men associated with Fairfax include: Thaddeus Stevens ( delegate from Rhode Island to Congress), Booker T Washington (founder and first African American president of Tuskegee Institute), Jno Jackson (mayor & governor of New Orleans), Ziegfeld Follies performer Groucho Marx

Fairfax County is located in the Eastern U.S. and covers an area of nearly 220 square miles. The county was formed on November 3, 1785, from part of Loudoun County. Fairfax is one of four counties in Virginia that are defined by their border with Montgomery County, Maryland. As a result, the population of Fairfax is much more diverse than the population in other parts of Virginia. The county has a large number of Native Americans who live in the Pocomoke River Valley region around Frederick and Annapolis Counties to the south and east. Some German immigrants also settled in Fairfax during the 18th century. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Fairfax were Germans who came overland from Germany about 1740s-1750s as part of a larger effort to settle down along the Potomac River corridor after French and Indian War victories at Saratoga and Yorktown respectively. In 1785, George Washington sent commissioners to survey land for future wards within Fairfax County which would be called "New Kent." A census taken in 1800 showed that there were 1,883 people living in Fairfax while only 283 lived anywhere else within Virginia including Alexandria proper (then known as Prince George's County). This growth continued through most of the next century as farming became more common among Virginians and new housing developments sprang up throughout Northern Virginia; however it was not until after World War II when annexations by other jurisdictions made it possible for Fairfax to grow even faster thanks to its location on two major Interstate highways – I-95 & I-495 – making it easy for businesses to relocate here without having to go through Richmond or Norfolk just upstream. It should be noted that although northern Virginians generally view themselves as being proudest bastions of Anglo culture – due largely to history books rewritten over time emphasizing General Robert E Lee’sptaics such as “the Battle Of Mechanicsville” – many African American residents have played significant roles both politically and economically in this historically white majority county since its inception including farm labourers employed by white landowners before emancipation such as Booker T Washington; Boostin Jefferson Jones Sr.; James Akins; Harry Belafonte; Wanda Sykes etc.; athletes like Roger Bannister & Usain Bolt; entrepreneurs such as Jim Clark & Jerry Lewis etc.; actors like James Garner & Tom Hanks etc., much has changed since then especially with respect to race relations with blacks playing prominently on local television screens acrossVa., particularly during recent periods such as #BlackLivesMatter protests while some black families have enjoyed relatively high levels of success despite facing social disparities elsewhere within Va.–most notably those experienced by various groups socioeconomically marginalized due primarily To poverty/income inequality& institutionalized racism (& police brutality) It should also be noted that following World War II there was increased diversity among workers because many manufacturing companies closed down or relocated away fromVA during this time period including Beechcraft Corporation (now Boeing), McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company (now Lockheed Martin), Ford Motor Company (nowrys), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Singer Sewing Machine Co., Coca Cola Refreshment Incorporated et al.–all moving westward into newly created states like WestVirginia et al..
