Fairfax, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,362. The name comes from George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. Fairfax County was created in 1781 from parts of Loudoun and Prince Edward counties. It became an independent county in 1847. The first settler in what is now Fairfax County was James Robertson who arrived on horseback in 1785. He named his land "Mount Vernon" after the British King George III's presidential palace on Kensington Palace Gardens, London. In 1801, John Taylor established a small farm near present-day Reston with his wife and four children to support themselves and their horses while their father traveled for business opportunities in England. The Taylors were helped by others over time as Fairfax developed into one of America's most diverse communities with several large plantations including Mount Vernon (later called Arlington), Cowpens Plantation (later known as Alexandria), Walnut Hill Plantation (now part of Sterling), Potomac Swamp Plantation (now part of Manassas) and Horse Branch Plantation (now part of Falls Church). In 1800s, many wealthy Virginians founded towns throughout western Virginia due to mineral wealth discovered along the Potomac River valley floor – including Springfield Township west of Arlington and Bladensburg Township east of Fredericktowns junction with Loudoun County – which led to increased trade between these areas and Increased travel through Dulles Airport outside Washington D.C., making it one of the most important transportation hubs during this period. This growth also led to more people moving into eastern Va., leading to what is now Northern Virginia becoming increasingly diverse culturally speaking both within its own borders as well as across Interstate 95 from Maryland to West Virginia; this trend accelerated during World War II when numerous military members settled here Thanks also to new technology that had been developed such as television and radios which made life much easier for families living far away from major metropolitan areas; however by 2000s few if any businesses or residents lived there anymore due to economic stagnation brought about by suburbanization around Greater Washington D:C.; however some people have tried revive interest in Fairfax because of its unique history
