It was located on the Potomac River near modern-day Arlington, Virginia. The station served as a control point for ship traffic and acted as a stop on the way to and from Naval Base Alexandria. In 1824, the Coast Guard Station at Arlington became operational and it continued to serve as a main headquarters for all Coast Guard Districts until 1966. The station also hosted a weather observatory which operated from 1828 until 1906. During its time at Arlington, the Coast Guard also acquired several pieces of equipment including anlaunch platform for launch of ships and an office building used by the Office of Naval Research (ONR). In 1865, the first Commandant of the United States Coast Guards assumed command of all United States coast guard forces afloat. At that time there were only six coast guard stations scattered throughout America with no unified command structure. As Commandant John Pugh quickly realized, his responsibilities included more than just guarding our coasts; he had to provide leadership for an expanding force that now numbered over 20,000 men and women. He set about creating a centralized command structure which would manage resources better and ensure coordination between stations across America. On July 1st, 1865 Lieutenant General Ulysses S Grant took command of all American military forces afloat effective September 16th following General Robert E Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House four days earlier. Under Lieutenant General Grant’s direction, Headquarters 9th URSG was moved from Boston to Washington D C in order to take advantage of new military facilities available there including Fort Myer Park (later renamed Army Field Forces West) which opened in 1865 and housed artillery batteries along with other physical infrastructure necessary for coastal defense purposes such as radar towers and warships moored offshore]. This move allowed Headquarters 9th URSG to take control of all land based assets west of Baltimore harbor providing them with much needed coordinating power effectively leading up to World War II]. By 1922 Headquarters 9th USRG consisted exclusively of officers assigned directly under Admiral Husband Kimmel who commanded both Atlantic Fleet area operations ashore as well as naval gunfire support off shore]]. With increased duties during World War II resulting in increased manpower requirements], Headquarters 9th USRG relocated once again within Fort Myer Park when it became clear that Defense Against Aircraft Attack(DAA) capabilities were becoming increasingly important]]. In 1951 Commander Julius Hahn assumed command assuming responsibility for all aspects ashore related thereto including air defense operations while concurrently serving simultaneously as Commanding Officer Western Pacific Force[WPF]). By 1957 Commander John Babbitt had succeeded Commander Hahn both positions being held concurrently until their respective retirements effective December 15th]}. Falls Church was founded in 1777 by Colonel George Washington and named for the falls of the Rappahannock River which ran through the town. Today, Falls Church is a small town with a population of around 30,000 people. Its primary purpose is to provide education and services to its residents. The Town of Falls Church was founded on April 12th 1777 by Colonel George Washington as part of his plan to rid the area of Indian threats. Washington ordered that all buildings within the boundaries of present-day Falls Church be erected within two weeks. The first building erected were barracks for soldiers garrisoned at Fort Cumberland on Great Kanawha River. In 1778, when word spread about General Thomas Valley's victory at Saratoga, General Washington ordered that all men within easy marching distance should assemble at Oneonta for military drills and parade under arms on July 4th celebration even though it was summertime. Assembling such an large force would have been difficult given present day traffic conditions but it is believed that this order helped lead to Valley's capture later that year. A water wheel powered by dogsleds brought water from Potomac River into Fallstown Mill which acted as fallmaster for House Water Works Surveys during construction between 1800-1802 by Major James Buchanan & Lt Col Elijah Whitehead & others who built new millrace (Cumberland Canal) connecting Springtown with Oneonta using dog sleds over longchannels carved out by nimble Indians working morning & afternoon jobs starting early [John Fenton map] In 1802 Captain John Fitzgerald established another water wheel powered by horses pulling heavy logs downriver from Paper Mill on Loudoun Heights near Manassas Junction Captain Fitzgerald also constructed rapids below Trenton where now called Fitzwater Rapids before being moved upstream electric power arrived
