Fredericksburg is a small town in central Virginia and the seat of Fairfax County. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond–Fauquier Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been home to the Confederate army for over one hundred years, and its battlefields are still active today. The first European settlers in what is now Fredericksburg were Scottish immigrants who named their land after General James Longstreet's victory at Chancellorsville on May 7, 1861. In 1812, an Englishman by the name of John Taylor purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) north of what is now downtown Fredericksburg from the Catawba Indian Tribe. He named his new land "Fredericksburg." In 1814, Robert Eppes built a house on what became Market Street in downtownFREDERICKSBURG. From this house, Eppes directed trade throughout much of central Virginia during the early 1800s. His descendant still lives on Market Street within walking distance of both Fredericksburg City Hall and Eppes' original residence. That same year, George Washington ordered General Charles Lee to move his headquarters from Petersburg to Yorktown so that he could command operations against British forces besieging that city during Operation Crossroads. When news arrived in late December 1799 that General Cornwallis had won a decisive victory at Yorktown- thereby ending Britain's War for America-Eppes took great delight in learning about it as he walked his streets near his former home next door to Stoneridge Wharf docks where he frequently spent hours fishing before returning home to dinner with family and friends aboard shipmates' vessels anchored there or ashore while they awaited word from Yorktown which finally arrived on January 17th 1800-four days after Cornwallis' surrender! Born into slavery near Charlottesville, VA., Frederick Douglass did all he could to free himself and fellow slaves by working as a slave laborer on various plantations until 1838 when he joined Captain John Brown's raid into Kentucky resulting in their successful capture of Harper's Ferry which ended slavery throughout most of Virginia... By 1865 only 5% remain among Virginians living below poverty lines; 85% American citizens reside within commuting distance either inside or outside metropolitan Richmond... Frederick Douglass Elementary School located across from Historic Capitol Building offers students an opportunity for hands-on history exploration through projects such as making gingerbread houses out of traditional building materials like logs and pinecones found around town The following year (1819), James Fenton purchased 400 acres (160 hectares) east side of present day Arlington Cemetery adjacent to modern day Pentagon south side extending back nearly two miles parallel to Potomac River including parts of today's Georgetown neighborhood Fenton renamed his property "Fredericksburg" in honor von der GRAUENBACH family who donated 500 acres (200 hectares) northeast corner lot adjoining White House east side also included lands now called Centreville/Winchester Farms Road etc.. Federicksburg was founded in 1765, as a smallpox-ravaged town on the Rappahannock River. The Confederates built Fort Fredericksburg to protect their supply lines from British troops and artillery batteries. After the Battle of Appomattox Court House in 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Fort Lafayette. The Union army burned down most of Fort Fredericksburg, but some of the cannons and other equipment survived and were used in the American Civil Warony remaining at Spotsylvania County Courthouse until 1898.
