The history of Hopewell, Virginia's gourmet coffee industry goes back to the 1800s. The first coffee house in the town was built by a group of Italian immigrants in 1824. Over time, other Italians and Germans also established businesses in Hopewell. The early coffeehouses served as meeting places for local farmers and merchants, as well as gatherings for local political and social events. By 1860, Hopewell had become one of the most important coffee-producing towns in Virginia. The earliest coffee beans were grown on land donated by Captain John Smith of Winchester County. Coffee was roasted here until the mid-19th century before it was exported to England and other markets around the world. In 1846, Captain John Smith's son-in-law Benjamin Banneker opened an apothecary shop in town which became known as Banneker & Sons Apothecaries Ltd. This business served as a seed ground for many later gourmet coffee companies such as Blue Bottle Coffee Company and Peet's Coffee Company. In 1865, Colonel Robert Epps founded Roanoke Coffee Company with his brother Amos Epps. Roanoke soon became one of the leading gourmet coffee companies in America due to its high quality beans and innovative methods of roasting them. During World War II, Roanoke helped produce millions of pounds of caffeine for military use within hoursof war centers all over America. After the war, Roanoke turned its attention to marketing its beans globally through their retail stores and online store). By 1990,Hopewell had become an important node in the global gourmet coffee industry with more than 100 cafes located throughout North America (including 20 located inside Canada), Europe (10 locations including London), Asia (5 locations including Tokyo), Australia (2 locations), South Africa (1 location) and New Zealand(1 location). The first coffee shop in Hopewell was opened by C.W. Watts in 1892. The first commercial coffee beans were roasted and sold by Watts and his wife, Anna, at their farmhouse on the north side of town. In 1916, George Rector opened the first grocery store in Hopewell and began selling coffee beans to local residents. By the early 1920s, there were six or seven businesses operating in Hopewell with a total of twenty-four employees. In 1927, Winton Coffee Company opened up shop in Hopewell and began roasting its own beans. By 1933, there were twelve businesses operating in Hopewell with a total of ninety-eight employees. In 1937, the Hopkins Coffee Company merged with Winton Coffee Company and became known asHopEWELL COFFEE COMPANY INC.. The company continued to roast its own beans until it closed down in 1984.

Hopewell is one of the oldest towns in Virginia and has been around since 1753. The original inhabitants of Hopewell were the Powhatan Indians who built their villages on the east bank of James River. In 1814, when President James K. Polk established the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Hopewell became an important educational center for eastern Virginians. The community's rich history began with its first settler, John Whitehead, who arrived in 1753 and built a log cabin on what is now Court House Square. Whitehead was followed by his son-in-law and grandson, also named John Whitehead. These early settlers were farmers and traders who developed a successful business operations at Hopewell Ferryboat Landing on James River. They also engaged in lumbering and other commercial activities along the riverbank which contributed to the town's growth over time. In 1814, when President James K Polk established the University ofVirginia in Charlottesville, Hopewell became an important educational center for eastern Virginians through its affiliation with that institution as well as its location adjacent to then-President George Washington's Mount Vernon home). As part of this growing community enrollment emerged as one of key social issues facing residents during this period – due primarily to low levels of education among rural Virginians – efforts were made by local educators to create opportunities for students from all social backgrounds to participate in curriculum and research projects offered at UVA. This emphasis led eventually to development within Hopewell itself of programs such as financial accounting and surveying which helped lay the groundwork for subsequent technological innovations within our region throughout much later eras!
