In the early 1900s, some farmers began to grow corn on their land east of Route 22 near what is now Hopewell Elementary School; this led to the town's nickname "Corn Town". A milk processing plant opened there in 1926 and continues operation today as Eastern Creamery LLC.. The townsite changed hands multiple times until it finally passed through purchase by Fairfax County government officials in 1990 as part of an overall consolidation plan for its constituent jurisdictions..

By 1835, however, the population had decreased to 400 because of economic problems caused byhentry farming and other activities that did not require much labor force development in such an undeveloped area In 1865, Hopewell was among the communities along with Winchester and Stonington to submit petitions to President Andrew Johnson asking him to declare a national emergency due to the Civil War In 1870-71 (the year before its incorporation into Prince George's County), Hopewell erected two white oak trees on Main Street as part of its National Agricultural Fair program The first post office at Hopewell opened on February 14, 1875 In 1907-08 (the year before it amalgamated with other localities within Prince George's County), Hopewell erected a new white oak tree on Main Street as part of its annual Christmas Celebration
The Hopewell community was founded in 1775 by John and Sarah Hopewell. The first settler, John Hopewell, built a log cabin on the banks of the Rappahannock River. The town was named for a nearby hill called "Hopewell" because of its resemblance to an early European settlement called Grainsheaf. By 1800, the population of Hopewell had increased to around 100 people. The town experienced some growth after it became part of Virginia in 1801. In 1812, the town's post office was moved from Winchester to Hopewell because of its closer proximity to Richmond.In 1865, during the American Civil War, General Robert Ewell built his defenses at Forney Hill in nearby Arlington Heights and ordered all civilian residents of Arlington Heights evacuated. Many local farmers and laborers joined Ewell in his defense and many homes were destroyed or burned during this time period. Many hopefuls sought refuge within the fortifications but most managed to escape before hostilities ended. During Reconstruction following the war, Hopewell slowly regained its previous level of prosperity until World War II when it lost much of its manufacturing industry due to production located in other areas across Virginia prior to that war's onset. In 1951,Hopewell incorporated as a city under Section 8 housing legislation which provided public housing opportunities for low-income citizens who were not able to afford more market-rate housing elsewhere in Richmond County. When Hampton Roads Expressway began construction through Hopewell in the early 1990s much commercial redevelopment took place along with new apartment buildings and retail spaces; however no downtown development has taken place since then which has created some challenges for pedestrians walking through what once was a vibrant downtown business district full of shops and restaurants dating back over two centuries
