Leesburg, Virginia is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,871 at the 2010 census. It is portions of the Loudoun and Fairfax counties. Leesburg was founded in 1739 as an independent settlement on present-day Leesburg Road by Captain James Lees and his brother John. It became an established commercial center after its founding; traders from Jamestown brought goods to Leesburg from the Chesapeake Bay during the early days of Virginian colonization. The first store in Leesburg was built on what is now Main Street. By 1820, the town had become a bustling agricultural center with one of the largest cotton plantations in America. In 1881, county seat designation changed to Mechanicsville due to political alignment within Prince William County following a bill approved by the General Assembly of Virginia that year establishing Loudoun and Fairfax as separate counties. The post office at Leesburg was established in 1739, and continued serving until it closed on December 31, 1865 due to low mail volume. A new post office opened at Mechanicsville on January 1, 1866; it continued serve until 1975 when it became part of Washington D.C.. Leesburg is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 8,012 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Loudoun County, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1775 by George Washington and named for Admiral John Lees, who died during the American Revolution. The first known mention of Leesburg occurred on May 9, 1775 when General George Washington wrote to his friend Colonel Robert Dinwiddie that he had "found a small village in our rear called 'Leesburgh'." The village site had been abandoned by British forces after they overran Fairfax County on April 14, 1776. In 1814, Congress added Leesburg to the Alexandria area under the name of Alexandria and referred to it as "Leesburg." On July 12, 1861, Leesburg became an incorporated town when it was accepted into the Fairfax County seat of government. Its website claims that incorporation happened because "the citizens desired more efficient government and were not content with having two governments operating side by side." In 1868–69, L&N Railroad built a line from Fredericksburg through Leesborough connecting with other lines near Winchester and Manassas Junction In 1896 (and again re-elected November 3), James Witherspoon Ketchum was elected Mayor of Leesburg serving three terms before being impeached due to bribery charges in 1899; he resigned soon afterwards amid similar allegations against him throughout Loudoun County. He left no children who could succeed him as mayor so his office passed out of power to one of his assistants until 1903 when another election resulted in Harry Fenton becoming Mayor effective December 1st following Witherspoon's death only months earlier while still on trial for bribery Charges which caused some conflict between Ketchum followers and Fenton followers who continued using their mayoral offices until 1916 when Fenton won reelection unopposed despite rumors that Ketchum had aided him during his campaign). In 1917 there was another election where Harry Fenton became Mayor but this time without any opposition due largely to World War I draft shortages which were starting to become apparent in Loudoun County at this time; however since then elections have been held annually on December 1st with no major changes except for occasional special elections which are not open to everyone regardless of party affiliation
