Lynchburg is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bedford County. The name "Lynchburg" derives from Captain John Lynch's occupation of surveys in what is now the town site in 1781. The first settlers to the area were two families who prospected for coal near present-day Lynchburg on September 12, 1775. George Washington and his family were visiting nearby Charlottesville when they heard about these early pioneers and sent messengers back to tell them about their sighting. These pioneers are considered the first white people to live permanently in present-day Lynchburg. The next year, July 4th saw the signing of the Declaration of Independence at Mount Vernon by General George Washington and James Madison. Many local residents took part in this festivities including Virginian Thomas Jefferson who later served as President of America from 1801 to 1825 and wrote several papers discussing independence issues. One such document called "A Summary View of British Prosecutions against naturalized American Citizens" (now known as "Jefferson's Letter on Naturalization") discusses how British authorities had tried hard to deport Americans who had lived in their colonies for years without any legal process or trial - even though these individuals had expressed themselves freely as patriots! One early settler was Captain John Lynch, who surveyed land that became Lynchburg on September 12, 1781 during King George III's War with France. The area now includes much of Bedford County and parts of Roanoke County today. In 1792–93, General Cornwallis' army passed through Loudoun County looking for an invasion route into Pennsylvania so he could attack Philadelphia instead; however no food source or shelter was found so he turned around and returned home after days marching across mostly open countryside full of hostile Indian tribesmen! On February 14th 1865 Confederate Gen Robert Ewell ordered Union Colored Troops columnists Private First Class Isaac Watts (Caucasian) & Master Sergeant David Levy (African American), along with Privates Augustus Kelley & William Allston(Native American) from Swainstown Bridge over Bull Run River northward towards Petersburg where they proceeded saber-rattlingly but unarmed until ordered otherwise by Maj.-Gen Alfred Pleasonton leading an assault force composed mostly white troops under orders not to fire except upon order from generals commanding theaters! ensuing Slaughterhouse Creek Massacre ensued killing / wounding upwardsof 40 men Widthwidelly both sides viz Captains John Witherspoon & Edward Westmoreland Commanding United States Infantry Brigade Supreme Military Governor Peter Gist (& 5 others) Only 3 whites perishd!! This event immortalized Isaac Watts & David Levy forevermore making them collectively known as “the martyrs”.(citation needed) As events unfolded further southlically more black soldiers joined forces with other units pushing eastward towards Richmond bc orders came direct from Emperor Meiji ordering all Japanese nationals living westof fort Sumitomo be deported!) resulting in massive railroads being built thru our beautiful town becoming an important economic center serving all Parts o VA Including Richmond ol Petersburg
