Lynchburg, Virginia is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lynchburg-Fredericksburg, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1799 by George Washington and his family on land purchased from the Monacan tribe. In 1819, General John Pope and his brigade of Virginians fought their way through Lynchburg to join General Robert E. Lee as he marched south to fight against President James K. Polk in the Battle of Antietam Creek (October 20,1862). In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked and burned down part of Lynchburg while its people were fleeing; this event is commonly known as "the Burning of Lynchburg." The destroyed buildings still stand today as evidence of how much value these structures held for early settlers in an area that had been under Federal occupation since war began. In 1871, Jno. Waddell built a sawmill on stream near present-day downtown Lynchburg and opened it up to industry for the first time ever in America. This mill started what would be one of America's largest lumber companies - Waddell & Co., Ltd.- with mills located here throughout central Virginia until it merged into United Sawmills Incorporated in 1966. Today, many residents still live close to their original homes or businesses which include a variety of retail businesses such as restaurants/cafés/bars/stores etc., department stores like Macy’s and Sears Roebuck & Co., post office facilities including both mail drop boxes and main mailboxes within walking distance (with USPS rates included), library services including a branch located on Main Street adjacent to convenience store chains like Vons and Supermarkets etc., numerous parks (including Lickett Park which contains several tennis courts), golf courses (notably two within minutes' drive) all providing access to essential public services without leaving home; also note that almost every community in this area offers significant nightlife opportunities whether it be bars/restaurants/nightclubs or more traditional venues like ballgames or theaters/. lynchburghvilletown
