Lynchburg is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 24,754 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fairfax County and home to the University of Lynchburg. The town was founded by James Ewing in 1776 as Augusta on the Rappahannock River. The first settler named Lynchburg was Nicholas Lynch who arrived in 1777 from England. In 1802, General Robert Ewell established a military post here and renamed it Fort Ewell after himself. In 1811, Richmond became the capital of Virginia and Fort Ewell reverted to its original name; however, for many years it continued to be known as Lynchburg because that is where James Ewing had originated his name from. This location became an important agricultural center due to its fertile soil and abundant rainfall which made possible large crops such as corn, beans, tobacco, rice and wheat. By 1800 there were over 100 families living in what is now downtown Lynchburg with about 50 businesses operating within a radius of 10 miles (16 km). prospering during this time period were two cotton plantations owned by John Fanning & James Iredale-both located on present day Lombard Street-and one sugar plantation operated by David Waddell & Hugh Lawson also located on present day Lombard Street which all produced high quality goods that sold throughout northern Virginia and beyond. This period also saw significant growth in the city’s commercial districts including First African Baptist Church (now known as Christ Episcopal Cathedral), High School Annexe (now part of US Capital Community College) situated on today’s 1st Street West between Lombard Street and 5th Avenue North; Merchants Exchange Building erected soon after around 1830 at corner of 2nd Avenue NW/West Main Streets [now demolished]; Masonic Lodge No 3 – built c1820 next door to 2nd Ave NW [now standing], now used for apartments; Four Corners Monument erected c1800 near intersection of 4th Avenue NE/East Main Streets [now destroyed]; brick school building erected circa 1810 situat ed east side Court House Square across from current City Hall annexe buildings along Washington Boulevard south side but not connected by road until 1865 when road was widened into alley leading from court house square directly to City Hall annexe buildings; Market House built c1825 at corner of 4th Avenue NE/East Main Streets near current Post Office Annexes northeast corner lot adjoining George Washington University campus; Market Place developed adjacent courthouse square beginning about 1840 following plan laid out by Surveyor General John Taylor Jr.; first brick church dedicated here circa 1830 followed by brickMethodist Episcopal Church dedication 1861; first black family moved into city circa 1870 During this time period “the great cotton mills whistle through town streetsides enjoying their bountiful harvests while farmers everywhereabouts labored valiantly with their hogs, cows or slaves†according to historian Sanford Hirschman who wrote “Lynchburg: A History 1890-1990″ authoring history for US Capital Community College Press 2009). Cotton production declined during the mid 19th century due primarily to increased competition from other industries but continued growth has been seen since then thanks largely to strong pedestrian traffic patterns emanating from downtown which attracts visitors seeking attractions such as art galleries, museums and several universities including UVA which relocated here in 1965 bringing muchneeded economic development both for Lynchburg itself as well as surrounding suburbs.. In 1860s Confederate General Jubal Early took advantage of Union Army failures resulting in three days long siege culminating with general capitulation at Appomattox Court House leaving behind more than sixty thousand casualties among Confederate forces occupying Northern Virginia - most notably Lieutenant Colonel Robert Anderson who commanded Virginians under Early throughout most if not all aspects of his campaign.. Aftermath see: Reconstruction Era up until 1920 lynching incidents During Reconstruction Period starting about 1870 any white person arrested or convicted for crime within 25 miles (40 km)of Petersburg or Alexandria JAIL received a death penalty regardless whether they resided locally or not-. This policy free reign allowed Southerners some degree if control over local decisions regarding law enforcement .. Lynching incidents occurred intermittently until around 1920 when laws changed making it an offense no longer punishable by death..african Americans faced significantly higher levels of violence than whites even though rates varied depending on socio-economic factors
