In 1868, Mayor Charles Cotesworth Marshall donated two new officers’ uniforms to the City Hall Police Department for use by their officers on special occasions such as coroners’ inquests or state funerals. These uniforms are still used today and can often be found displayed inside City Hall along with other memorabilia from Cotesworth Marshall’s time as mayor of Lynchburg. One of Mayor Marshall’s other gifts to the City PD was a motorbike which had belonged to Deputy Sheriff Harry Ahern and is currently located at Mountain View Road Police Station within city boundaries adjacent to Justice Park Cemetery where Marshal officiated at Harry Ahern’s funeralbed service upon his death in 1951. In 1920, Lieutenant Edward Muhlenberg became one of the first law enforcement officials ever assigned permanently to Lynchburg when he joined the force from Richmond following its annexation into Virginia Beach%. At this time, Lt Muhlenberg also received a bike which he rode around town on since it could not be taken onto buses or trains due to government regulations at that time regarding equipment providing transportation between jurisdictions without prior consent from both local authorities! On October 5th 1924 an incident took place within minutes after hours when three men were walking down Main Street about a block away from downtown when they were approached by Patrolman Charles Fenton (then 21 years old) although they had no weapons! After questioning them about their activities that evening they identified themselves as members of riot control Company 2/5th Btn VC National Guard units quartered nearby! Upon further inquiries it appeared that these men did nothing more than walk down Main Street lawfully under protest against recent legislative changes affecting municipal services! This event remains oneof lore associated with Patrolman Fenton and has been immortalized through song by local entertainer Clyde Rice!! The next year saw another addition to our policeman gift history with Vice President Harding making an official donation for use within our city limits – a bicycle!!! This particular bike has remained present ever since within City Hall rotunda area near Policemen Command Post where Harding made his address during ceremonies marking 100 years since Virginian Railway built its line connecting Blacks Point Terminal & Petersburg mainline station
