Manassas, Virginia became a center of coffee production in the late 1800s. Manassas is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 17,482 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Potomac River and is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The first permanent white settler in what would become Manassas was Captain John Smith in 1617; he named it after his native village of Manchester, England. The first home in what would become Manassas was built by Colonel John Smyth on land granted him by King George II of England for military purposes during the American Revolution. Englishman James Bonham arrived here with his wife and six children in 1781 after leaving England to fight for independence from Great Britain. He called the community "Newtown" because he had not yet acquired title to all of present-day Fairfax County and planned to move his family there when he did so. In 1814, General Robert Ewell built a small fortification on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River near modern day Manassas Park before moving artillery upriver to Alexandria Barracks to protect himself against an attack by British forces under Lord Dunmore that same year. Ewell's position marked one of largest strategic advantages along river front during the revolution and allowed him To control much of central Virginiaiane approaches northward into Maryland Territory which Ulysses S Grant later captured following his successful campaign through Loudoun County into Pennsylvania Territory (now Delaware). On July 15, 1861, Confederate soldiers burned Government House in nearby Laurel Heights as part of their raid on Washington D.C., starting the First Civil War.(1) On October 12, 1861 Confederate troops destroyed UnionGeneral Joe Johnston's Headquarters at 3rd Street NW near National Cemetery #2 Monument.) This event became known as Battle Of Antietam.(2) In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Meridian Hill just southeast of present day Manassas Junction where he ordered soldiers unloading supplies from wagons outside Fort Wise while surrounded by Confederate forces commanded by Major General Jubal Early III.(3) Afternoon sunlight revealed 4 large cannons mounted on wagon frames within 300 yards (291 m)of Grants location – this placed Early too close for effective shooting and led to his surrender three days later at Appomattox CourtHouse eastern edge of today's Manassas Park neighborhood southwest of I-495 exit ramp.) For many years afterward Confederates erroneously believed that these cannons were remnants leftover from fought at Antietam.(4) In 1922 Congress passed an act authorizing President Warren G Harding to erect a memorial stone tablet recognizing service members killed or wounded during World War I & World War II conflicts west of Baltimore line.) Coffee was brought to Europe by sailors in the 15th century and became popular as a beverage after being introduced to England in 1614. The Dutch also discovered coffee and began importing it back to their country in 1624. In 1842, French traders brought espresso beans from Italy to North America and started selling them here. By 1830, espresso had become an official beverage in Spain. The popularity of coffee continued to grow throughout World War II because so many people depended on it for their morning caffeine fix. Coffee became more affordable after World War II because demand for it increased domestically as well as abroad. AfterWorld War II, some people began growing other crops for use in making coffee such as cocoa and tapioca instead of using beans. Coffee consumption peaked around 1970 due to technological advances which led to easier ways for humans to produce more caffeine without going through rigorous training programs like those required for producing traditional Arabica beans (the type typically found in dark roast coffees). Manassas was a small town in Virginia during the American Revolution. It was located on the Rappahannock River, about 25 miles east of Washington, D.C. The town had a population of around 100 people when the war started and grew to over 500 by the end of the conflict. The town was founded by John Gibbon in 1777 as part of a larger Virginia settlement called Winchester. Gibbon thought that his new community would be safer than Winchester, which was under siege from British forces. The town slowly grew throughout the years, becoming an important center for trade and commerce in early Virginia. In 1801, Manassas became part of Maryland after it seceded from Virginia. However, because Manassas lacked a government, it remained an unimportant stop on the road between Washington and Baltimore until 1814 when Federal troops burned down much of the village to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. After Confederation (the creation of America as a country), Manassas reverted back to its original name: Winchester until 1861 when it changed again to Manassas Junction after Union General George Bancroft organized Kentucky's first railroad through that area. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell destroyed most of Manassas Junction with artillery while attacking Union Army troops besieging Petersburg; this event is often considered one of history's biggest strategic failures by both sides in World War II. During World War II, many factories were built in and around Manassas Junction due to its proximity to military production sites across North Carolina and Virginia Beach; these plants produced materials such as munitions and aircraft engines used in Allied campaigns against Nazi Germany and Japan respectively. After World War II ended, many businesses went out of business or were closed altogether due to economic decline within post-war America; however, some aspects of manassean history remain popular among residents today including historical attractions like The Gibbon House Museum which tells the story of John Gibbon’s origins at Winchester Town Hall and features exhibits on local farm life during Revolutionary times
