Martinsville is a town in Hanover County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Martinsville were Carter and Wright brothers who journeyed to this area in 1819 looking for a new place to establish a farm. In 1824, John Marshall erected his home on land that he had purchased from the Indians. He became one of the first white men to own land in what is now Martinsville when he bought 6 acres (2 hectares) of land from John Thomas. The town was founded on February 12, 1830 by James Dandridge and others as "Dandridge's Ford." Dandridge named it after General Arthur Stoneman whose victory over Native Americans at Monacacy Bridge near present-day Martinsville won him international fame. After three years of development, growth and inconvenience caused by Indian warfare which began in 1755 and continued until 1758, the citizens voted on December 15, 1834 to rename their town "Martinsville" after Patrick Martin who had been killed while fighting with Andrew Jackson's army during the Mexican–American War at Buena Vista Bridge seventeen miles east of Martinsville. In 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived here following his raid into Maryland where he had captured President Abraham Lincoln before transporting him back to Richmond aboard an ironclad ship called Demonstration because no other vessel could accommodate him or his horse artillery which weighed more than 20 tons each. The event made history as it was also one of only times an American general had traveled so far inland within our country specifically for political purposes! From 1865 until 1971 much of downtown Martinsville was under military control due to its strategic location between Petersburg and Lynchburg Courthouse making it difficult for civilians to operate businesses or enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking or fishing without fear of being seized or attacked by military units stationed nearby including Fort Harrison which stood across the street from Main Street today! In 1971 local businessman Bob Bostick obtained a civilian lease from then Army Commander Major General Edwin Momyers allowing business owners/citizens access to city hall through negotiation rather than violence tactics used against previous tenants! One result has been increased use of modern technology including online ordering for goods available 24 hours a day 7 days a week!
