The Naval Weapons Station was responsible for developed naval munitions including torpedoes and mines that could be fired from vessels on land or at sea. In 1829- 1830, an American vessel named HMS Fortunate sank off the coast of North Carolina after running into trouble with Spanish treasure seekers looking for Spanglish gold coins worth $500 million! This event became known as “The Pirate Treasure Hunt” and many sailors donated money to help finance this expedition! Commodore Robert Haddock (a British officer) commanded HMS Vengeance during this particular hunt and he personally collected $40 thousand dollars from various sailor donations! As a result of this donation campaign, Commodore Haddock became one of the richest men in America! In 1835- 36, General Nathaniel Pakenham led an army against Mexico during what is known as The Mexican War. At some point prior to this conflict, General Pakenham had purchased twenty five barrels of powder from Captain John Forbes at an auction in Norfolk VA! Later that year, General Pakenham thanks Captain Forbes for his gift by naming HMS Warrior after him! In 1861- 62 when Confederate forces invaded Virginia we secede from Great Britain! At first there was much excitement among Virginians about this development but eventually anxiety set in due to questions about our right to do so under United States law! In 1865- 66 King George II visited Marines stationed outside Richmond VA on USS Monitor while campaigning against Ulysses S Grant’s Union army!! This event symbolized Virginians rise up against Union tyranny!!! By 1870- 71 all fishing operations had been closed off near Guantanamo Bay Cuba due to shoal conditions caused by yellow fever!!! However throughout most of this time local fishermen managed to catch occasional fish using traditional methods including netting nets overdeep water!! Later that decade local merchant J T Whitaker established himself withinMartinsville by buying out Captain John Forbes’ share in Naval Weapons Station buncombe!!!!!Whitaker continued developing marine gifts until his death in 1922!!!!! After Whitaker’s death there continued TO BE A MARINE GIFT INDUSTRY IN MARTINSVILLE!!!!!
