The Newport News Naval Shipyard is home to a number of Navy vessels and it has been through many transformations since the early days of the United States Navy. As one of America’s largest naval shipyards, NASW has produced some of our most famous warships, including the USS Constitution (1794-1865), USS John C. Stennis (1948-1973), USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and the Nimitz class submarines. It also built the first ballistic missile submarine in United States history, but closed its doors in 2006. NASW is now a Foundation that helps support Naval Forces Europe. Today, NASW continues to produce military vehicles and equipment for both American and NATO forces around the world. These include tanks, artillery systems, helicopters and other combat vehicles as well as maritime patrol aircraft. In recent years, NASW has also become known for producing unique gifts for those in uniform – from ceremonial swords to commemorative coins – all designed with love and care by its employees. One such gift is the HMS Enterprise Class Submarine Museum Cruise Missile Boat “Pineapple” which was donated to NASW by Commodore John Waddell in 1978. The boat was originally used as an experimental platform during World War II by Commander Tenth Fleet during exercises off Okinawa Island before being deployed to California in 1951 as part of Operation Coral Sea following Japan’s surrender. Pineapple served briefly with distinction while deployed before she was decommissioned in 1957 after being placed back into service as a training vessel until she was donated to NASW in 1978 under Commodore Waddell’s leadership. She remains Operational today providing visitor access to her original machinery and art collection aboard her berth at Newport News Shipbuilding where she can be docked for tours weekdays between 9am-4pm EST or when available on weekends from 12pm-4pm EST

In addition to its traditional businesses such as fishing, farming, tourism and transportation industries, Newport News also features some innovative businesses such as the Blue Ridge Parkway Authority which operates the parkway system within the city limits
