Norfolk, Virginia is a small town in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The population was 7,876 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Norfolk Peninsula and forms part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. Norwich is bordered by Chesapeake Bay to the south, James River to the east, and Newport News Harbor to the north. The town was first settled in 1607 by Nicholas Noriega and his followers from New Netherland. In 1745, merchant George Washington established a trading post here which became known as "Washington's Fort." A number of other early settlements were built in what is now Norwich including: Cartersville (1750), Middlebrook (1753), Mount Pleasant (1757), Northfield (1760) and Westfield (1764). Norwich grew rapidly during its early years but declined after 1815 due to hostile Indian attacks and low demand for goods produced in nearby Norfolk. However, since 1800 Norwich has experienced an increase in development as it annexed several adjacent villages including Easton, Hampton Roads Station, Waterford Heights and Woolston. Norfolk resident George Orwell wrote about life in Norfolk during World War II in his book "Orwell's Norfolk". The novel tells the story of three generations of Norwegians who live around Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where they work on USS Constitution Class warships during World War II. On July 20th 1945 American forces liberated Norwich from Japanese occupation with Operation Downfall; this event is considered one of America's most significant military victories preceding their war against Japan two years later. postwar growth brought many new residents into town including many police officers who served until 1997 when all law enforcement functions were transferred to Suffolk County Sheriff's Office; however much of downtown business remains unchanged today except for a few updated buildings such as City Hall which still stands today cornering Main Street between Canning Avenue & King Street
