The Norfolk Naval Shipyard was one of the most important naval shipyards in the United States during World War II. The program began as a small project in 1939, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the construction of five destroyers for the country’s navy. The first two ships were built at the shipyard, but were destroyed in an accident in 1941. The following year, Roosevelt created a national effort to build warships and gave orders to build twenty-six vessels. The program continued under Secretary of Navy James Forrestal with new projects such as USS Constitution (1826), USS Maine (1863), and USS Monitor (1864). By 1945, the yard had produced over 1,500 warships and boats. In 1942, America entered World War II and signed an agreement with Great Britain that allowed American submarines to operate off British ports. This led to increased demand for warships from both countries. In 1944, Northrop Grumman company became interested in designing submarines and submitted a proposal for creation of a submarine pier on Elizabeth Island near Norfolk. After much debate between navy officials and representatives from other companies, Northrop Grumman won the contract to create a submarine pier that would serve both America and Great Britain for fifty years. Norfolk Naval Shipyard played an important role during World War II as one of three primary yards where warships were built; along with Baltimore Harbor and Portsmouth Navy Yard. As one of only two U S naval yards located outside New York City area—the other being dry dock facilities at Pearl Harbor—Norfolk was able to produce high quality warships that helped protect America during wartime events such as Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th 1941 which resulted in injury or death dozen sailors including Admiral Chester Nimitz who later commanded United States Pacific Fleet In addition to its Role as a Naval Shipbuilding Center During WWII Norfolk also became homeport for US fleet Air Forces during post-WWII era by becoming hub for operations at Hampton Roads AFB From 1948 until 1972 Carrier air wing 4th Fleet operated out of NAS Norfolk while land-based units took over upon withdrawal from Cold War

The first English settlers in present-day Norfolk were led by Captain John Smith on a reconnaissance trip through the area in 1609. The first post office was established in 1701; it was called Norwich because then Governor Thomas Fairfax sent Postmaster General Richard Nepean there to find out about postal service between Portsmouth and Newport News (now Hampton Roads). bacon's mill caught on quickly as a commercial center due to its proximity to shipping routes and its ability to process large quantities of flour, salt pork, cheese, butter, etc., all from local grains and animals. By 1800, Norwich had become one of Tidewater's leading manufacturing centers with mills producing everything from hats butts to cannonballs! Norwich also became known for its annual fair which revived agriculture by bringing buyers and sellers together during summertime on account of their high prices for goods unavailable during winter months In 1814 Norwich was chosen as capital of what would become Virginias Confederation under President James Ketchum In 1861 Norfolk became an independent state when it seceded from Virginia Norfolk has been ranked second highest per capita income rate among all American cities by Forbes magazine since 2000 Norwich remains part of Hampton Roads metropolitan statistical area which includes Roanoke Rapids (the regional capital), Salisbury (a small town adjacent to downtown), Danville (southwest suburban neighbor), Winchester (northcentral suburban neighbor) as well as parts of Elizabeth City (to the northeast) and Petersburg (to the northwest). Norfolk, Virginia is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is the county seat of Norfolk County. The population was 97,594 as of 2010. It is an important port on the James River and a manufacturing center for seafood products. In 2014, Norfolk was ranked as one of "America's Most Liveable Cities" by Forbes. The area that now includes Norfolk was first inhabited by hunting and gathering peoples who would move here during times of drought or when their crops failed. To these people, the bay at which Portsmouth stood offered perfect fishing grounds due to its many sandy beaches and offshore reefs. The area was then purchased by English colonists in 1607 as part of King George's War with France. As this region became increasingly populated, new towns were formed around Portsmouth: North Hampton in 1614, West Hampton in 1621, Salem in 1624-25, New London in 1627-28, Boston Necklace in 1629-30 and Jamestown on Mayflower Bay in April 1630. These areas served as separate towns until 1851 when they were consolidated into what is now Norfolk County under the name of Southampton Township. Norfolk began to prosper after it became an important seaport for goods entering and leaving Britain during the eighteenth century through trade with Africa and Asia. Shipbuilding played a significant role here too; several large vessels were built at Portsmouth including HMS Victory (quadrangular frigate), HMS Repulse (tonsilaginous warship), USS Constitution (foreshore fortification) and USS Perry ( flagship). Many Norwich residents went on to become famous navy officers such as Admiral John Smith and Rear Admiral Samuel Graves – both of whom commanded American navies during the Revolutionary War against England. In addition to its maritime heritage, Norwich also has a rich history within evangelical Protestantism dating back to early nineteenth century missionaries who established churches hereabouts such as First Presbyterian Church which remains today one of the largest congregations within that denomination outside North America.
