When the Confederate States of America was formed, many people in Petersburg, Virginia decided to join. The first military unit among these new rebels was the 1st Battalion of Cavalry which raised its flag at a crossroads on December 12th, 1861. In 1865, when Richmond was sacked by Union forces, much of the city's infrastructure had been destroyed. This left Petersburg with a small army and no means to provide for its soldiers' needs. However, this did not prevent the city from becoming one of Confederacy's most religious and patriotic cities. Through donations from citizens and businesses alike, Petersburg managed to purchase over 100 cannon, 75 rifles and 300 rounds of ammunition for the Confederate Army. This act demonstrated not only Richmond's support for the Confederacy but also its commitment to preserving Confederate culture and heritage. The City Council passed an ordinance recognizing January 21st as " Confederate Veteran Day" in 1973 in order to commemorate all those who had served in our military during that time period. Since then, there has been an annual event dedicated to honoring these patriots - called "Operation Homecoming." On November 4, 1917, during World War I, Petersburg was hit by an aerial bomb that destroyed most of the town center and killed over 100 people. The bombing has been memorialized in various ways including a statue of a Japanese soldier erected outside the local high school and in downtown Petersburg since 1954. The history of Petersburg goes back to its founding as a small frontier post on the Nash River by Nicholas Cooke and others. In 1864 it became an incorporated Town under the name of Petersburg with a population of around 150 people. In 1917 when World War I started, Petersburg was one of several towns located along North America's eastern seaboard that were put into military service due to their proximity to battlefronts or because they supplied essential goods and services to their citizens who were fighting abroad. One such example is Portsmouth, New Hampshire which had its own airfield just east of town which served as headquarters for Allied forces during World War I; this airfield also remains active today thanks to Peninsula Corridor Airports Inc., LLC which leases it from Norfolk Regional Airport Authority (NRA).
