Poquoson is a town in Prince Edward County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,832 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Falls Church–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Poquoson was settled in 1784 by Captain John Smith and his party on the Potomac River after they discovered an abandoned Indian village there. The first white settlement in what is now Poquoson was established by Nicholas Goffe in 1814 on land he purchased from the Chickahominy Nation. The town was named for Major General James A. Poquoson who served as military governor of Virginia during the American Civil War and died there in 1865. The first post office in Poquoson was established on December 15, 1814, with Wm Fenton as its first mail carrier. In 1827, a schoolhouse and printing press were built near present-day Main Street; this establishment became known as "Poquoone" or "The Post Office". In 1828, George Washington College (now George Mason University) opened its doors in downtown Poquoson; it would remain one of Virginias most important educational institutions until it merged with Randolph-Macon college to form Norfolk Southern Corporation in 1970. In 1830, Bezanson Bros., merchants and builders located on what is now Route 7 between Fort Fairfax Road and Alexandria Avenue began erecting houses which grew into what are today numerous businesses including Bankers Trust Company (1912), JB Hunt Paper Co., Incorporated (1986), Tyson's Cafeteria & Sports Bar (1989), Chiquita Brands International Incorporation(1993) - all located within walking distance of each other across several blocks of Main Street/Route 7 corridor beginning around 1930s through present day days - makingPoquoson one of the most walkable small towns ever created! During World War II much naval activity took place along both shorelines adjacent toPoquoson harbor - Naval Air Station Point Lookout used various facilities such as an airfield that included a B-17 Flying Fortress hangar which can still be seen at nearby Arlington National Cemetery today! The name Poquoson comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where two rivers meet." In 1802, Poquoson became a part of Prince Edward County, Virginia. After becoming independent as a town in 1825, Poquoson grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of 350 people. The town's economy changed when the railroad came to Poquoson in 1864. With the arrival of the railroad, many farmers moved to Poquoson looking for work on the track. By 1870,Poquoson had become an important shipping and trade center because of its location at the mouth of the Potomac River. The town also developed into a manufacturing center because of its proximity to several mills run by local businessmen. In 1928,Poquoson became one of fourteen townships in Prince Edward County that were merged intoingo larger Fairfax County government. Since then, Poquosons growth has slowed down slightly but it still retains some importance within Fairfax County government because it has three congressional districts (the 3rd District being particularly significant).
