Roanoke was founded in 1611 by John George Washington. The town was named for the black roan horse that belonged to General James Iredell. Roanoke became a British colony in 1776 and was renamed Elizabeth City in 1784. In 1801, the town became an independent republic and was renamed Virginia. The town's first hospital opened in 1802 and its first library opened in 1807. In 1861, Roanoke became the capital of Confederate Virginia and remained so until 1865 when Richmond took over. The town lost much of its commerce during the American Civil War but continued to exist as a rural community until it closed its doors in 1949.
