They established a small fortification to protect themselves from hostile Indians, before beginning their new life as colonists. At first, the settlers were very successful, but within a few years they had to face many challenges. One of these was the problem of food supply. The island had no natural resources and therefore must have relied heavily on imported goods for food and shelter. This led to tension between the colonists and their suppliers; eventually violence erupted. In order to combat this issue, Governor John Graves Simcoe set up an advisory board which consisted of experienced men from England with knowledge about Indian affairs. This board helped provide reliable food supplies for Roanoke Island while also fighting against Native attacks. However, despite these successes, many colonists died during the early years of Roanoke because of lack of resources and war-related dangers.. In 1747, after several years of hard work and much sacrifice by both men and women, Governor Simcoe announced that all English colonies in North America were to be called Virginia - named after Prince Royal who had married Queen Anne in 1688! From then on it was easier for people to find work in England because there was now one name for all those colonies: America! After several decades of growth and development at Virginia's hands, things started going wrong starting with World War II when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor killing more than 20000 people including 3000 Americans! Virginia faced huge economic problems as a result of WWII; its economy contracted by over 50% which caused large numbers of Virginians to lose their jobs or leave the state altogether! However given that most Virginians did not support Republican Party politicians during wartime - like Harry Truman - most problems turned out okay afterwards! Finally there was another major recession throughout the late 1990s which hit especially hard those hardest hit by technological changes like emailing (the internet) and cell phone use! Nevertheless Virginians bounced back remarkably well thanks largely to strong community spirit – some might say ‘lady luck’ – together with entrepreneurialism!, faith in God (!), good character evaluation processes (such as McDonnell Douglas), tight fiscal discipline (without government giveaways!), entrepreneurship!, innovation!, international competitiveness (!), dedication towards education reform (!), creative industrial leadership groups such as Hampton Roads Shipbuilders Association!), national service (!). So what does this really tell us about our beloved Commonwealth? First off it shows just how resilient communities can be – even when times are tough! Secondly it tells us how important it is for everyone who lives inside Virginia's borders (whether you're a resident or not) to stay engaged politically/economically/socialize regularly so we can keep our lights on & stay afloat!!! And finally…Virginia is definitely one HELL OF A STATE TO LIVE IN!!!!
