Salem, Virginia is a town in Page County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is home to Salem College and the former site of John Marshall High School. The town was founded by English colonists in 1724. Salem was named for Colonel Nicholas Salisbury (1695-1768), who had been stationed in New England during the Indian War and who had become a friend of George Washington. A small community developed around Marshall House on the north side of Salem village until 1736 when Colonel Salisbury sold his holdings to James McDowell and others for $5 per acre. McDowell then donated land south of present-day Main Street to build what would eventually be called "Marshall's Academy." The new academy became one of America's leading educational institutions with an enrollment of 1,000 students by 1807. In 1812–13, Salem were among a group of American towns that unsuccessfully petitioned Congress for independence from British rule. After Confederation, Salem reverted back to being a part of Page County until it was abolished as an incorporated municipality in 1907 by Act 7of that year which provided for Township reorganization within Page County into separate civil divisions; effective date November 1st 1907 .
