The first European settlers in present-day Staunton were farmers who descended from English families that had settled in what is now Northumberland County, Virginia in 1607. By 1775, when George Washington was inaugurated as President of the United States, only 3 percent of the population of Alexandria (now Arlington) remained British subjects while more than 60 percent of the Virginians living there were American citizens or Loyalists who sided with Great Britain during the Revolutionary War. In 1835, George Washington appointed John Covington as Postmaster General for PrinceWilliam and Fairfax Counties; he successfully ran an effective mail service that functioned until postal reform eliminated patronage by public officials in 1861. In 1841-42 prominent Virginian lawyer James Buchanan served as Postmaster General for both Fairfax and PrinceWilliam Counties before his appointment to Ulysses S Grant’s cabinet as Secretary of War; he reorganized post office services throughout the nation after a series of devastating firestorms destroyed most provincial post offices during 1846-1847. After leaving government service in 1865 due to age or ill health, Mrs. Anna atoms Noyes took up residence near what would become known as "Noyes's Corner" on Hogan Road between 1933 and 1951; she donated land for a schoolhouse which became Staunton High School (later renamed Staunton Christian School) on October 1, 1935; Mrs. Noyes also provided funding for construction of a second school building which became known as "Noyes's Annex". On October 15th, 1952 – one year after her death – Mrs. Noyes' donation became officially accepted by the State Board Of Education as part of an effort to create "A Better Tomorrow Elementary/Secondary Schools District." These projects are intended to help improve active living conditions within downtown while also supporting village businesses along Main Street adjacent thereto. Today, there are more than 2 million residents living in Staunton – making it one of Virginia's largest cities – while its vibrant commerce continues to fuel local economy growth rates above average throughout Fairfax County.*
