The Virginia Beach Air National Guard's 116th Airlift Wing provides lift to perform operations in support of the United States military in Europe. The wing is also responsible for numerous other missions and tasks within the state of Virginia, as well as providinglift to various coastal communities throughout the state. These services have come to be known as "the air force." One of the most famous deployments by the USAF was when theyDeployed a Joint Task Force Hurricane II aircraft carrier task group to provide humanitarian assistance following Hurricane Katrina. This deployment marked an important milestone for VA Beach and was a testament to ourunit's culture and capabilities.

The USAF was created in 1947 as part of the American War Department's establishment of a permanent armed forces to support Dwight D. Eisenhower's Four Year Plan for peace in Europe. The USAF traces its origins to World War I, when American aviators played an important role in defeating Germany. Since then, aerial warfare has become one of America's most essential arms, playing a leading role in both world wars and their respective Cold Wars. Today, with over 350,000 active duty members and more than 120,000 reserve members,[1] the USAF provides deterrence against potential adversaries while also providing Required Service Time (RST) for national defense purposes. In addition to its combat operations around the world, the USAF supports homeland security by conducting surveillance and reconnaissance missions; providing missile defense capabilities; operating Global Hawk aircraft; conducting operations within Afghanistan and Iraq; responding to natural disasters such as hurricanes Katrina and Sandy;[2]and more recently Operation Neptune Spear.[3] In Fiscal Year 2019 (October 1- September 30),the USAF employed about 126,500 service members including 771 Special Operations Forces operators who conducted 24% of all US counterterrorism operations[4].

Virginia Beach is a town in Virginia, United States. It was founded on the Potomac River by colonists in 1775 and has been home to residents since 1776. The city is located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, just north of Chesapeake Bay. As of the 2010 census, the population was 78,828. The history of Virginia Beach goes back to its founding as an agricultural community on the Potomac River by members of the Virginia Company in 1775. In 1871, it became a municipality with a population of 62,000 people. After World War II, many military families moved into Virginia Beach and formed what is now known as "The GI Generation." This group included many soldiers who had served in Europe and Asia during World War II and their children who grew up here after the war ended. Today's Veterans Affairs Medical Center provides health care for veterans from all over the United States as well as world conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
The birth of Virginia Beach is often considered to be in 1742 when the area that now makes up Virginia Beach was first settled by English colonists. The town's name, derived from "Virginia" and "Beach," came about because at that time there were no seashores on the Potomac River. In 1607, Sir Walter Raleigh explored and mapped much of what is now North Carolina and Georgia before returning to England with tales of a great country to the south. After his voyage, Raleigh convinced King James I of England to give him land in present-day Maryland as a reward for his exploration. One hundred years later, in 1819, General Robert E. Lee fought at Second Manassas against Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant and General George McClellan, helping make Virginia Beach one of the most important coastal towns in America.
