Virginia Beach is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 121,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The history of Virginia Beach dates back to 1792 when British colonists founded the town on Princess Anne's Island in Chesapeake Bay. They named it after Prince George, Duke of Kent and Strathearn who had died young in India during the French and Indian War. The town grew quickly, becoming an important seaport for goods transported from North America to Europe and Asia. In 1814, General James Armistead invaded Virginia and captured Norfolk; as a result, much of what is now Hampton Roads was within Confederate territory at that time. After the Civil War ended in 1865, Virginians voted to re-establish their state government as a separate country – this led to the name change from "Norfolk" to "Virginia Beach". In 1872, construction began on three ships' quays: one near present-day Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and two further upstream at Elizabeth City Naval Station. These were known as 'The Three Quays'. By 1905, over 100 small businesses had been built along Patriot Avenue between Elizabeth City Naval Station and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with employment reaching 10,000 people per week. In 1915 (the year before World War I), 50% of all military equipment procured by America's munitions manufacturers came through Virginia Beach docksyards; these included 870 guns for use by American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I In 1924[2], Fairfax County annexed most of what is now Newport News County; this left onlyVA Beach remaining within Richmond County which then annexed Henrico County in 1926[3]. After years of planning by both counties,[4] VA Beaches Drive was first opened to traffic on November 12th 1959 (the date which has since been celebrated as 'VaBeach Day').
