When the United States Air Force deployed its 1st Expeditionary Airlift Squadron in Camas, Washington in early 1951, it was an important moment for the community. The squadron's arrival brought new life to a decrepit old airstrip and helped improve air quality in the town. Over time, the squadron has grown from a single unit to an entire wing of fighter aircraft that flies more than 100 missions a year Support Squadron members provide support essential to Air Force operations, often working long hours under difficult conditions. The history of the 1st EAS is reflective of America's commitment to global security and its commitment to promote aviation reliability and sustainability. The squadron began as a meteorological detachment stationed at Boeing Field in Seattle during World War II before moving to Camas Municipal Airport in 1946. In 1948, when America joined World War III, the station became 2nd EAS with an expanded mission including providing communications support for bomber groups engaged in strategic bombing raids over Japan. After hostilities ended, 2nd EAS returned to Seattle but kept its role as a weather detachment until 1952 when it moved permanently into Camas Municipal Airport. In 1955, when Camas Municipal Airport closed due to lack of runway space for heavy bombers operating from Boeing Field (later renamed King County Fairgrounds), 3rd EAS was activated from Spokane International Airport and took up residence at Camas Municipal Airport until 1961 when it relocated permanently into Tacoma-Tacoma International Airport. In 1965 3rd EAS transitioned from Republic F6U-2s (engines removed) used for instrument flying training towards Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters which served as primary means for USAF aerial reconnaissance during peace time deployments throughout Southeast Asia After withdrawal of American forces from Indochina following Operation Market Garden on 15 October 1975 3rd EAGBanned all combat missions against North Vietnam effective 01 November 1975 however continued humanitarian flights with callsign Citi Flights under various NVA call signs until withdrawn by USAF 31 December 1978 3rd EAGBanned all combat missions against North Vietnam effective 01 November 1975 However continued humanitarian flights with callsign Citi Flights under various NVA call signs until withdrawn by USAF 31 December 1978 . By 1981 only civil flight operations were still continuing with NVA call sign "Citfly" . Camas is a small town in the Yakima Valley of Washington, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Yakima County metropolitan area. Camas is located on the south bank of the Columbia River and has a clear view of Mount Rainier National Park to its north. The name Camas comes from the Wenatchee word "kamas" meaning "place where reeds grow." The earliest mention of Camas was in 1846 when Captain George Vancouver passed through on his way to found Puget Sound. He noted that there were several villages along the banks of the Columbia River but he thought they might be named for trees; he called them Klamath Falls and Klamath Lakes. In 1855, John Wesley Powell discovered Gold Mines at nearby Enumclaw and named it after his friend and predecessor as U.S. Geologist geographer James Hutton who had explored this region two years earlier with Major Edward Condon during Powell's exploration expedition led by Lieutenant David Hunter de la Salle in 1841-42 under direction of President James K. Polk In 1861, Tacoma entrepreneur Henry Cowles built an unsuccessful mill at what is now known as Cowles Dam on Cayuse Creek, about northeast of today's Camas. Cowles' major development effort in this vicinity was building a road linking his mills with Tacoma via what is now Interstate 5 (then State Route 20). In 1863, pioneer EDDIE BAILEY arrived from Canada with news that gold could be found near Marysville in King County; Bailey's group organized into a company to prospect for gold near Marysville which resulted in establishment of what became known as Massacre Gulch (now US-101) southwest of present day Camas about east-northeast of present day Haileybury Road (SR-191). Camped out near Massacre Gulch over winter 1863/64 + 64/65+, we encountered emigrants coming downriver from Fort Lewis who told us about sizable quantities assayable at various points along river but noAttempts have been made so far to verify these claims...There seems little logical connection between these events and any observed physical features or deposits anywhere around Massacre Gulch...We cannot rule out that some other event occurred here prior to our arrival which influenced our later findings but current evidence does not support this claim." A post office operated at Camas from 1865 until 1890; mail was delivered by boat upriver to Salmon Bayou acrossfrom present day SR-191 before being transported by wagon train overland back downriver past Haileybury Road (now US-101) all the way to Tacoma The first store opened here dates back to 1870 when Alfred Iverson opened an Implement Shop & Livery which served many farmers and ranching interests up through World War II . Mr Iverson eventually sold his interest& business moved to Cheney then Richland before finally retiring here in 1980 ) A new shopping center completed in 2002 downtown provides much needed local access gridlock relief from Highway 99E bypassing town limits

In 1984, Lieutenant Colonel John Singleton donated a motorcycle to General Michael Hayden as part of his Operation Neptune's Spear commemoration. From then on it became an annual tradition for the USAF to send a Gift History Unit detachment to commemorate Memorial Day each year. This year marks the 75th anniversary of World War II and with it comes another opportunity for the USAF to send a Gift History Unit detachmentSCA-464-10 into harms way once again!
