"Bob" Matson and his troop of the 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division on Valentine's Day. The infantry regiment's deployment was motivated by an article that appeared in the Seattle Times on February 14, 1945 regarding service members who had served in Europe during World War II. The paper quoted from an anonymous letter that stated: "As soon as we got back we went out and threw open all our doors to everyone who wanted to come and see us...It just seemed like everywhere there were people coming down for a look at us and what we've seen...We didn't have time to get too many presents because so many people came." Matson wrote that he found it difficult not to give away any of the gifts he received from civilians or military personnel he met while stationed in Europe. Some of these items include cigarettes, cigars, hats, and clothes. He also remembers taking some Christmas presents home with him such as a radio set and a Victrola player which his wife enjoyed playing music from outside their home. Matson is credited with being one of the first officers in the United StatesArmyto deployments abroad without receiving formal orders from Headquarters US Army Forces Europe (USAFE). Mukilteo is a small town in the state of Washington, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mukilteo-Pasadena Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Mukilteo were fur traders and missionaries from Russia who arrived in 1851. The town was founded on December 4, 1865 by John Waddell and his family as a summer colony for miners who had found gold near Puget Sound. In 1868, mining operations began to produce valuable minerals such as gold and silver, which led to the town's growth. By 1882, it had become an incorporated municipality with a full voting rights. In 1907, Mukilteo became the seat of Washington County after its western border was reallocated from King County to that county pursuant to the provisions of the 1889 Seattle–Tacoma Treaty between Washington and Oregon counties (the old Kingdom County borders Puget Sound on its eastern edge). At this time there were only 8 residents in Mukilteo; today there are over 100 people living in downtown Mukilteo alone due to growth in nearby Redmond and Bellevue since then.
