Beckley is a town in Wise County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wise County. Beckley was founded in 1812 as an early settlement on the banks of the Potomac River, about 10 miles (16 km) south of Fredericktown. In 1827, it became one of the original 24 townships in West Virginia Territory and was named for General John Beckwith, who had fought with George Washington during the American Revolution. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Beckley sided with the Confederacy and furnished supplies to its army. In 1865, after Union troops sacked Charleston and captured all but a few buildings in town center, Beckley again sided with the Union; this time as part of a larger effort to successfully retake Charleston from Confederate control. The community began rebuilding following Reconstruction and retains many characteristics that attracted people to it during that time: its richuvial soils and location on navigable waterwayside made it an ideal place to settle down and raise crops; its close proximity to Petersburg allowed easy access to military action or politics; and its status as a stop on the Underground Railroad helped protect fugitives from slavery
