The Charleston, West Virginia Army National Guard is one of the oldest and most well-maintained military units in the United States. The unit was originally formed as a colored militia on December 15, 1861, following the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. The unit was redesignated the Fourth Infantry Regiment on November 1, 1864. On July 1, 1896, the regiment was reorganized as an infantry brigade under command of Major General James Longstreet. It concurrently became part of Regional Force 2 and served in World War II as part of VIII Corps. In 1946 it became an all volunteer reserve force and remains that way to this day.
