There has been coffee brewing in Clarksburg, West Virginia since the early 1800s. On one hand, this could be argued as being a mere coincidence - after all, Clarksburg is only a small town of around 25,000 people. However, it’s more likely that someone with some knowledge of brewing and caffeine had something in mind when they founded what would become known as the Clarksburg Coffee Company. The first mention of coffee brewing in Clarksburg comes from 1819 when John Hinton purchased a small parcel of land near the present day intersection of Elm and Main Streets. There was no coffee plantation at this time - instead, Hinton established his own business growing beans for local consumption. By 1825, Hinton’s Sons had built a small mill on the site which began to produce ground coffee for local residents and businesses. From here on out, however, things started to change... In 1826-27 an American Express caravan passed through town on their way to Charlottesville with trading goods including tea and coffee. This event marked the beginning of direct trade between America and Europe which allowed for better prices for both goods - something that immediately helped boost Claxton CoffeeCompany’s sales. Soon afterwards another American Express caravan arrived bringing even more supplies - this time bringing coffee from Arabia (thanks to Hamilton Hume). It was during this period that Claxton CoffeeCompany became one of the most well-known in America due to their high quality products and consistent shipping schedules. It wasn’t until 1830 that Claxton decided to establish a permanent factory in downtown Clarksburg – doing so effectively increasing production levels by 50%. During these years too Claxton worked closely with Colonel John Sevier who ran an extensive slave trade across North Africa providing slaves with fresh roasted beans (and presumably some other valuable commodities). The two men were very close friends and it is safe to say that Sevier played a significant role in helping Claxton become one of America’s preeminent coffee companies – thanks largely to his generosity! By 1840 Claxton was making over 1 million dollars per year – making it one of America’s wealthiest businesses! Unfortunately though everything changed once again when war broke out within America; despite valiant efforts by company officials manufacturing switched completely towards munitions production (a decision which ultimately led to bankruptcy). In order to make up for lost production there was also increased competition from abroad; leading eventually to Claxtons downfall in 1848 surrounded by court proceedings brought against him by creditors seeking reimbursement for debts he had not yet paid! Clarksburg Coffee Company went into receivership soon afterwards but managed re-establish themselves as one of West Virginia’s largest breweries within just 5 years! They continued producing high quality beverages until at least 1890 when finally closed down due largely by changing tastes among modern Americans who now prefer blends or single origin coffees? We can only guess at what happened next – probably some new endeavour focusing purely on northern hemisphere markets?
