The National Guard in Huntington, West Virginia has a long and proud history. The units that make up the National Guard have helped protect the community since its inception in 1861. The unit was founded on July 10, 1861, when West Virginians gathered to form a volunteer militia to support the Union army in the Civil War. At first, the National Guard consisted of only men from West Virginia. However, over time, it grew to include troops from all across the United States. Today, there are more than 2,000 members of the National Guard in Huntington County. The unit is responsible for providing law enforcement and support services including ceremonial guards at statewide events and parades; conducting search and rescue operations; providing security for federal buildings; guarding state prisons; and providing assistance during natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes. In addition to its role as an essential part of our democracy, the National Guard also provides important cultural experiences for local residents. For example, every Fourth of July celebrations features a parade through town with national guard contingents marching alongside local businesses and organizations. In November each year, Huntington celebrates Veterans Day with large military displays at county fairs throughout town. The Huntington National Guard was organized on July 24, 1889. The first unit to be organized was Company A, 2nd Battalion of the Huntington National Guard. The company was authorized on December 10, 1889 and mobilized on January 8, 1890. On February 1, 1890 the company moved to Huntington and became Company D of the 3rd Battalion of the Huntington National Guard. On November 15, 1892 the battalion deployed to Fort Fillmore in New Mexico for a season of duty as part of the Department of Texas Expedition. On August 10, 1893 Companies B and C were activated from Reserve Unit #2 at Paintsville and deployed to Stonewall Jackson Barracks in Newport News for three months service as part of the Army's West Virginia Division under General John J. Pershing. In 1898 companies F and G were activated from Reserve Unit #3 at Middletown and deployment began October 1st with Companies F taking up quarters at Fort Harrison in Richmond while Companies G took up quarters at Fort Donelson in Nashville before being redeployed back into Huntington on November 9th where they remained until relieved by companies H and I on December 11th 1899. The last unit that was activated out of reserve units #4 & 5 were Company K which activation occurred on November 25th 1903 when it relieved company L which had been mobilized originally for service with Spanish American War but never served due to World War I re-activation efforts#5 mobilization effort started September 7th 1904 with Companies A through E (the two original companies from reserve units) arriving in town site ready for organization however only Company F arrived because Orchard Park Armory failed to meet their enrollment quota so instead detachments from each unit separated resulting in detachment K arriving first followed by detachments L&M then finally H&I leaving only detachment K behind which reverted back to original business name after new armory opened

The name of the town is derived from the Jamestown colony of settlers which was located on what is now Huntington Beach Boulevard (U.S. Route 35) and died out after less than two years in 1619.

Huntington is a town in Huntington County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Huntington Festival takes place each year in late July or early August in honor of the town's rich cultural and historical heritage.
Huntington was founded in 1792 by Captain John Huntington and his wife, Judith. The town was named after General George Washington because of the Revolutionary War veteran's involvement in the area. In 1819, the United States Congress designated Huntington as a territorial capital under the Organic Act of 1830. It remained that way until 1861 when it became an incorporated city. At its founding, Huntington had only a population of 10 people. By 1860, it had grown to over 100 people and its first mayor, Isaac Paine, was elected at-large with no representation from single districts. The city annexed two adjacent villages on each side of Route 12 in 1875: West Point on the east and South Huntingdon on the west side. From this time forward, Huntington grew rapidly into one of America's largest cities with a population over 1 million people by 1900.
