The U.S. Air Force deployed a gift in Morgantown, West Virginia on November 20, 1947 as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the air force. The gift was the first ever given to the community by an air force installation. It was given to Headquarters Air Forces Europe (HQAFE) at RAF Bentwaters, England by Lt. General James Doolittle and criteria for selection were that HQAFE be operational until 1957; have an active duty population exceeding 5,000; be situated in a location where excellent weather conditions are available for flying operations; and serve as an important adjunct to NATO forces in Europe. HQAFE's first commander was Lt. Colonel Harry Hoehn who served from October 1, 1946 until his retirement on July 15, 1951. Majors Clifton Ahern and Carl Kapp took over command from Hoehn on July 16, 1951 until their retirement on October 1, 1956. On January 6, 1957 Majors John Fenton and Willis Bynum took over command from Kapp effective January 7th through February 3rd 1957 when he retired due to age restrictions set forth by then Secretary of Defense James Forrestal Jr.. Majors Melvin Jantz took over command effective February 4th 1957 until his retirement on May 1st 1958 due to health reasons related to hypertension management which had been my problem since I joined up in 1944! The last major change with respect to command structure came about when Brigadier General Robert Cramer assumed command effective June 30th 1958 upon Majors Jeffery Sauer's promotion from First Lieutenant general into Brigadier General status! Finallyeffective May 9th 1959 headquarters moved out of RAF Bentwaters into new buildings at Langley AFB after almost two years of construction! This move allowed for increased accessability for flying operations during bad weather events such as hurricanes or typhoons because Langley AFB is located much closer to cities than RAF Bentwaters! HQAFE flew its first mission using Lockheed P-2 Neptune aircraft against targets within Germany on September 10th 1945! From this point forward it became one of NATO's most aggressive fighter wings with missions flown worldwide including attacks against enemy installations both within and outside Germany including Saarbrücken (Saarbrucken), Donaueschingen (Donaueschingen), Rhein Main (RhinMain), Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Koblenz (Koblenz) and Wiesbaden (Wiesbaden). Additionally it also engaged in surveillance activity throughout Central Europe operationally providing intelligence support for allied ground troops fighting against Axis forces throughout World War II! In total HQ AFE flew more than 2 million aerial missions during World War II totaling more than 890 campaign sorties! Morgantown is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County. The first permanent settler in Morgantown was Elijah Hicks in 1786. The first store was built on what is now Main Street in 1827 by John Percival and James Gentry. In 1830, the post office was established at Morgantown and it remained so until 1907. In 1848, work began on the original courthouse which would eventually be completed in 1853. The town's first school was built that year to serve students from Morgantown, surrounding villages and farms. A second school opened in 1861 and served students from all of Mingo County as well as parts of Carbon County during the Civil War. The railroad arrived in Morgantown just after World War I and quickly became one of town's most important economic engines with its own shops, mills, warehouses and passenger trains serviceing both local passengers and those travelling to points eastward along the Susquehanna River
