The United States Air Force has been deployed to South Charleston, West Virginia for many years now. The deployment of the USAF is a testament to the people and the community of South Charleston. South Charleston is a town in Mercer County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. The town is named for General Robert E. Lee and was founded in 1827 by settlers from North Carolina. South Charleston is located on the Potomac River and has a large expanse of farmland near it on both sides of the river. The first permanent settler in South Charleston was James Murchison who arrived in 1827. He built a log cabin on the site of what is now downtown South Charleston and named his settlement after General Robert E. Lee, one of Virginias most celebrated generals during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1829, James Murchison's son John arrived with his wife and two children to help build present day downtown South Charleston. JohnMurchison erected a frame courthouse which still stands today as part of City Hall Park. In 1830, Henry Washington came toSouthCharleston from Augusta County, Georgia with his family to pioneer westward along the Potomac River towards Wheeling WV then Martinsburg WV and finally Clearfield WV where he established himself as a trader and landowner In 1834-35 George Stephenson built an iron bridge over the Potomac River at present day Downtown South Charleston which became known as "the Stephenson Bridge". This roadway facilitated further trade between Southern West Virginia smugglers operating out of Southern Maryland and Northern Kentucky smugglers running their operations out of Northern Virginia It also helped contribute to development within today's Downtown SouthCharleston area including many commercial establishments that can be found lining Main Street today such as J&J's Pizza & Subs., Best Buy - Store #1B & 2A., Applebee's - Store #2B & 3A., Subway - Subway #4A & 4B., Chick-fil-A - Chick-fil-A #5E
The area that today is known as South Charleston was first settled by the Shawnees in the mid-19th century. The town was founded on a small island in the Kanawha River, and began to grow when it became accessible to white settlers. In 1868, South Charleston was named the capital of West Virginia after the state's first governor, John C. Breckinridge. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reaching its peak in 1925 when it had a population of over 72,000 people. However, economic decline followed during the 1930s and 1940s as coal production fell behind other riverfront towns in West Virginia. By 1990, South Charleston had shrunk to less than 10,000 residents and its only remaining industry was agriculture.
