The history of artisan coffee in South Charleston, West Virginia begins with a small cafe that served quality coffee and pastries until the early 1930s. The first cafe was located on Union Street and it operated for about 10 years. In 1936, the first espresso machine was purchased by Angelo Amato, who ran it for about 5 years. The next year, Mr. Amato opened his own café called Joe's Coffee House which served premium coffee and pastries until 1961. During this time, Angelo also started making his own espresso beans which he sold from his café. In 1966, Joe's Café closed down due to financial difficulties and its owners were unable to keep up with the competition. However, in 1984, Luigi Bianchi reopened Joe's Café as an Italian-owned coffee shop that continued to serve high-quality coffee and pastries until 1992 when it was closed again because of low sales volumes. In 2002, Andrea & Michele built their first restaurant called Pianobarra Coffee House which became one of the most popularartisan cafes in town after they introduced their unique blend of Colombian coffees into the business. They have been serving delicious sandwiches every day since then! South Charleston, West Virginia is a small town in Hampshire County, West Virginia. The population was 5,061 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hampshire County. South Charleston is located on the southern shore of the Kanawha River and is bordered to the north by Huntington and to the east by Wheeling. The first permanent settler in what now South Charleston was James White who founded a cabin in 1792. The town was named for General William Troup who fought in the American Revolution and later became governor of Kentucky. In 1812, General John Custer died at Battle of Little Big Horn and his body lay near present-day Harrisonburg until it was found undiscovered in 1881 after which it was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. The town's economy has been largely agricultural since its establishment. Today, however, many businesses in South Charleston are related to tourism or other outdoor activities such as fishing or hiking. The town also has two museums: One celebrating local history and culture (the Blacksmith Museum) and one dedicated to art (the Old Hickory Gallery). South Charleston, West Virginia is a town located in Fayette County, West Virginia. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. South Charleston is home to the only high school in Fayette County and also has its own post office which has been in operation since 1892. The main businesses in the town include a grocery store and a convenience store. The first settlers to South Charleston were men from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1786. In 1812, the United States Congress passed an act that designated part of Fayette County as "South Charleston". The name originated with General John Forbes who supervised construction of Fort Donelson on the Ohio River near present-day Louisville, Kentucky. On October 16, 1812, General Forbes ordered his troops to march into town and celebrate by eating local food that they had gathered from farms nearby. In 1893, South Charleston's first post office was established. It served as the center for communication for all of Fayette County until 1974 when it became an independent municipality known as West Union Township. In 1978, SouthCharleston voters approved a $10 million bond referendum that funded infrastructure projects such as new schools and roads within the community including a harbor and civic plaza. Today, South Charleston is one of Walkerstown's most vibrant communities with many businesses and services available including health care professionals and several hospitals within easy walking distance
