South Charleston, West Virginia is a town in Randolph County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Randolph County and one of the most rural areas in the state. The town was founded on September 3, 1859 by surveyors for General James H. Lane and named for Confederate general Robert E. Lee. South Charleston developed as an agricultural center because of its location near the major transportation routes connecting Morgantown with Pittsburgh and Wheeling with Baltimore. Farmers grew tobacco, corn, hay, potatoes, applesauce, and other vegetables; livestock raised Hereford cattle and pigs; and manufacturing included several small businesses including a tailor shop and a blacksmith shop that produced shoes and saddles until around 1920. In 1925 South Charleston voters approved annexation by Morgantown following arguments that it would be more convenient to have a single large community than to have two separate towns withinRandolph County which are separated by farmland used for farming only part of the time during the year. The first African American to live in South Charleston was Lula Thomas who moved from nearby Clarksburg on December 2nd of that year. Thomas worked as a maid at local homes before she became integrated into local society in 1955 when she married white serviceman Leroy Cagle Jr.. In 1970s South Charleston began to experience growth due to its location as an academic center serving Randolph County high schools as well as its role as a crossroads for travelers between Morgantown and Wheeling via Interstate 65 or US Route 11 (the "Highway 61"). In recent years development has slowed due to budget cuts but there are plans underway to renovate many of South Charleston's historic buildings including its courthouse which is scheduled for completion in 2020

The area now known as South Charleston was first populated by the Shawnee and other Native American groups in the late 18th century. The first white settler in what is now South Charleston was Captain George Mason, who arrived in 1786. In 1800, a group of Englishmen from Virginia founded the town of West Point on High Island in what is now Huntington Beach, California. The town grew rapidly, and by 1812 it had a population of over 2,000 people. However, within a few years many residents had moved away to escape the violence and poverty that characterized much of early Charleston. In 1830-31, General Andrew Jackson led an army through West Virginia during his run for president. When he reached South Charleston he found it deserted and burned it down as part of his campaign against Southern Democrats. However, South Charleston was not completely destroyed; some buildings still stand today including the Governor's Mansion and the Masonic Lodge which once housed America's first theater. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 following the Civil War, many African Americans began arriving in South Carolina to rebuild their lives after being freed from slavery. This period is often called "The Black Wave". Many black businesses were started here during this time such as A&P grocery store #1 (now JCPenney), Piggly Wiggly restaurant located on Meeting Street near Easley Road and Colfax Avenue (now Hardee's) as well as Drake nightclub located at 6th & York Streets which served as a meeting place for various black organizations during this time period.
