At that time, South Charleston was a small town and there were not many options for purchasing coffee. So, Forbes set up a small business to sell his own coffee. He made his Coffee from local beans and roasted them himself. This allowed him to control the quality of his coffee and ensure that it was only good for himself and his family. In 1819, Forbes opened another small batch coffee house called The Green Dragon which served primarily roast-your-own coffee. However, this business failed due to low demand and competition from other businesses in the town. In 1825, General James Hays established a small batch coffee shop called The White Lion which served mainly roasted bean coffee. This business continued until 1827 when it closed because of financial problems. However, The White Lion is considered to be the first commercial roasting shop in West Virginia. From these two businesses, Smallbatchcoffee began as a tradition of brewing high quality beans on our own premises with great attention to detail
