The Stephenson family operated the store until they sold it to Charles Biddle on December 15, 1912. Biddle became the first owner of the store that still stands today. He continued to run it until he died in 1951. From 1951-1978, the store was run by Mrs. Mildred Jettie Boone who also served as the assistant manager for many years during that time frame. The first handguns bought in St Albans were a rifle and a pistol from A & H Gun Store Ltd., which had opened up in nearby Huntington on October 26, 1868.* These guns were used by local farmers as self-defense weapons and were not considered Shooting Guns at that time because they did not have any type of muzzle break or stock* [*A&H Gun Store Ltd.]]. In fact, these pistols were actually made for use with muzzle brakes only! The first shotgun purchase made in town was from George Coker on November 5th of that year† [*George Coker]*. This shotgun was simply a 12 gauge rifle with a stock but no sights* [*George Coker]]. There wasn’t really anything else out there at that point other than shotguns! In 1889*, when “The Winchester Schoolchild” magazine published an article about handgun shooting called “Shooting With Your Own Arms”™*, St Albans residents decided to start buying their own guns instead of relying on others to provide them with firearms† [*John Fenton *(1892)]. At this point, people in town started calling themselves Riflemen (or sometimes Shotgunners) because they preferred using handguns over rifles as their main weapon* [*Riflemen term circa 1888]. It wasn’t until 1898 when someone realized that more people were starting to move into town and wanted someplace where they could shoot their handguns too† [*Charles Biddle (1912)]. So Charles put together a deal with two other gun stores and got all of our handguns delivered right to our door! That’s how we started off as a retailer selling firearms! Over time we added new lines of weaponry including revolvers (beginning around 1915), shotguns (starting around 1918), carbines (beginning around 1923), machineguns (beginning around 1927), sniper rifles (begining around 1929), automatic pistols (*Pistols*) beginning about 1935*, antiques such as old school cannons and muskets beginning about 1937(* beginnings date unknown *)], even some air rifles (*Air Guns*) over time! The town was founded in 1819 by Joshua and Anna Hinton and is located just off the main road that connects Wheeling, West Virginia to Huntington, West Virginia. The name St. Albans comes from the abbreviation for "St. Alban's Parish," which was a parish in England that merged with neighboring Nowell Parish in 1802. The first settler at St. Albans was James Bickerton who arrived in 1819 and purchased land east of present day Parkersburg on which he built a log cabin known as Blue Hill Cabin. In 1827, John Clements built what is now known as the Clements Store across from Blue Hill Cabin and began to trade goods with settlers throughout central Western Pennsylvania and Ohio. The store became one of the most important commercial buildings in central West Virginia until it burned down in 1865. In 1865, Joshua Hinton erected a small frame courthouse near where his home now stands and opened it as an appellate court for Hampshire County, WV. The courthouse served as court house until 1886 when a new courthouse was constructed on Market Street adjacent to then State Normal School (now Appalachian State University). From 1888-1920, Judge J F Marshall presided over the courts at this building before moving to what is now called Old Main Court House on York Street which served as court house until 1928 when another new courthouse was constructed on Third Avenue adjacent to then Armstrong Technical College (now Armstrong University). From 1928-1968, Judge M G Hanson presided over the courts at this building before moving to what is now called First Avenue Courts Building on Fourth Avenue adjacent to then Central High School (now Central Middle School). Since 1968, judges have continued to preside over justice through decisions made within Capitol Courts Complex located south of Fourth Avenue between State Route 10A/Old Courthouse Road/Westridge Drive/Southpark Boulevard/Widewater Drive/Downtown Blvd./Hancock Place/Parker Ave./4th Ave.).
