Ashwaubenon is a town located in the Wisconsin State Senate district 9, which includes most of the town of Ashwaubenon. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what now is Ashwaubenon was John Crouch in 1834. The town was named for General George Washington. There are several buildings and other objects from his time still standing in town. Ashwaubenon had its first election as a town on April 14, 1854. It has since held regular elections every two years since then. The current mayor is Tom Kavanagh and the Town Clerk is Donny Smeatoni. The Town Manager is Dan Egan and there are also four deputy managers: Matt Frisch, Lisa Scherrer, Brian Wohlgemuth and Andy Ziegler. The library system features more than twenty-five thousand items including books, magazines, DVDs and music CDs - making it one of North America's largest publicly funded libraries by volume . Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin is the largest town in Beaver County, Wisconsin and one of the most populous towns in the state. The population was 9,859 as of the 2010 census. The Ashwaubenon community is located on a small peninsula between the Mississippi River and Lake Michigan. The town was founded in 1849 by immigrants from India. The first settler in Ashwaubenon was Pherode Wittmann who arrived from Germany in 1848. He built a log cabin onproperty that later became known as Wittmann's Landing. Other early settlers included John Hofer and Michael Kappeler who arrived around 1850. In 1851, John Kappeler donated land to establish a village at what is now Ashwaubenon Peninsula. It was named after him and his brother Isaac Kappeler who had settled near Milwaukee in 1825. The first post office was established at Ashwaubenon on October 21, 1851, under the name of Appleton Rapids Station. The growth of the town began with its incorporation as a village in 1865 by vote of residents of adjacent townships. By 1870, there were over 100 homes and businesses along with two churches and three schools within ashWaubenon Peninsula boundaries - making it one of Wisconsin's earliest villages! By 1890, there were more than 1,000 people living within ashWaubenon limits! During World War I (1914-18), many men from Ashwaubenon enlisted in service during various wars throughout America; some even extended their stay for several years! Many local businesses closed due to wartime shortages but many others flourished as customers came back for wartime goods! In 1919-20 when war ended and new restrictions reigned which limited manufacturing operations across all aspects of society including farming communities like ours emerged once again victors! Allowing us to experience another boom time which coincided with increased tourism opportunities This resurgence also led to an influx of young families looking for affordable housing close to major metropolitan areas during this time period; something our ancestors would have experienced firsthand ! In 1965 when Beaver County merged into neighboring Walker County we lost much cultural history but gained county seat status !! We are still celebrating our cultures today through events such as Cultural Heritage Days & Folkloric Dance weekend
As a result of the Great Chicago Fire, Ashwaubenon was among the most destroyed towns in the United States. The fire began on October 8, 1871, and burned for three days. estimate that over 100 buildings were either destroyed or damaged in Ashwaubenon.
