The Caledonia, Wisconsin Army Ammunition Plant was a major arms production center during World War II. It operated from 1941 to 1945 and produced more than 1 million rounds of ammunition for the United States military. The plant was designated as a National Historical Landmark in 1966.

Caledonia, Wisconsin is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,434 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The town was organized on October 15, 1854 by John P. Hickey from parts of Racine and Brown counties. At first it was called "Hickeyville". The name was changed to "Caledonia" on February 20, 1855. It had a population of 581 in 1870 and 1,419 in 1910. In 1880 Caledonia had a post office with the title of "Moses". From 1892 to 1907 it had the title of "Racine". On November 3, 1907 it became "Caledonia", again with the change to an honorific for its new political leaders including Judge John Fenton and Representative James Laughlin (D-Milwaukee). On January 25th 1921 Caledonia voted not to join any Statehood conventions being held at that time around the country as this would have given statehood rights to all towns within Racine County without exceptions ie: Hickeyville & other villages which were already stateless because they did not adjoin Racine County when it was organized on October 15th 1854

The town of Caledonia, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 by the Rev. Jameson A. Caldwell and others. The town rapidly grew in population, reaching a peak of 507 people in 1860. However, the gold Rush led to an economic recession in Caledonia during the late 1840s and early 1850s and the town declined thereafter. In 1864, however, Caledonia became the capital of Dakota Territory after Dakota statehood was granted recognition by Congress. As a result, Caledoniians began to identify with their new home rather than their hometown which had been abandoned during the Gold Rush era. In 1902, when Wisconsin became a U.S.-born state, Caledonia became its first community within the newly formed state. The CALEDONIA SCHOOL DISTRICT was established in 1915 and has since served as one of Milwaukee's most important educational institutions for children throughout southeastern Wisconsin.
Caledonia was first settled by the Menominee in 1763. The town was named for Governor James Caledon, who donated land to the town. The first school in Caledonia was built in 1828. In 1879, the first batch of immigrants arrived in Caledonia and began farming and ranching. The town's population grew rapidly from its initial population of 100 to 1,500 by 1900. By 1910, Caledonia had a large library, a post office, and three churches. The community experienced a significant growth spurt during World War I when many factories were established in the area. After the war ended, the economy declined and many residents moved away. However, some people remain today and continue to live in Caledonia as retirees or visitors.
