Cedarburg is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census. Cedarburg is part of the Green Bay–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Cedarburg were the Menominee and Potawatomi peoples. The first settler in what is now Cedarburg was John Smith who came to the area in 1834 from Virginia. He built a cabin on the east side of the river near where present day Lake Michigan meets Prairie du Chien Creek. Cedarburg has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years and is one of only two villages in Douglas County that still preserves its traditional cultural practices. In 1851, settlers arrived from Illinois and founded a new village called Harmony which quickly outgrew Cedarburgs growth. In 1853, another group of settlers arrived from Iowa and named their community Clearwater after nearby Clearwater Lake. This name change did not last long as settlement within Clearwater rapidly began to diverge and it was abandoned by 1855. In 1865, when Douglas County was organized into counties, Cedarburg became part of Rock Island County; however, it retains its original name today (after General James Houghtaling). After Rock Island County disbanded in 1893 due to lack of population Division authority, Cedarburg reverted back to its original name: "Cedarburgh". In 1907-08 there were numerous fires that burned through parts of western Wisconsin; this caused a great deal of damage done to local farms and dwellings which resulted in many residents fleeing to other towns during those days before fire suppression equipment had become more common. Many farmers returned once the fires subsided but others never really recovered from these losses until later times when they could finally rebuild thanks largely to government assistance during World War II both through loans and donations/grants specifically earmarked for rural communities like Cedarburg which had lost everything except their homes or landline service connections dueimerased duringinvasionand subsequentwarfarepoverty .
