The Army has been in De Pere, Wisconsin since 1846. The town was chosen as the site of the first American military post by General Anthony Wayne in 1847. The fortifications and buildings that are still standing today were built to protect the town from Indian attack. The first unit to be hired by the Army in De Pere was a detachment of farmers from nearby Green Bay formed on December 1, 1846. The men were armed with shotguns and hoes and served for one year. After that, they returned home and local residents donated their equipment to the Army. In 1861, when Fort Snelling opened its gates to soldiers, De Pere became an important military community. Three years later, on July 10th of 1863, General George Meade’s army landed at Pier 11 on Lake Michigan and encampment began at Snelling Barracks. There was much celebration as over 2,000 troops arrived in town including artillerymen and mechanics from Milwaukee who had built a new arsenal at Menomonee Falls just north of town. Army units stationed here included: 1st Battalion (National Guard) Wisconsin Infantry Regiment; 2nd Battalion (National Guard) Wisconsin Infantry Regiment; 3rd Battalion (Wisconsin Volunteers) Wisconsin Infantry Regiment; 4th Battalion (Wisconsin Volunteers) Wisconsin Infantry Regiment; 5th Battalion (Wisconsin Volunteers) Wisconsin Infantry Regiment; 6th Squadron Illinois Cavalry Unit A1-A2-A3-A4-A5; 7th Squadron Illinois Cavalry Unit B1-B2-B3-B4-B5/6 & 8th Squadron Iowa Cavalry Unit C1C2C3C4/D1D2D3/E1E2E3/F0F1F2 kept garrisoning Snelling Barracks until 1865 when all but 1 squadron left for duty in Louisiana during the American Civil War Army units that remained here after the war include: 9th Brigade National guard Infantry Regiment commanded by Major General Wm Hurlbut during World War I – this brigade fought at Battle of Belleau Wood ; 10th Brigade National guard Infantry Regiment – this brigade fought at Battle of Stony Brook ; 11th Brigade Minnesota Volunteer Militia Brigade commanded by Brigadier General John Sibley during World War II – this brigade fought at Guadalcanal

De Pere is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 12,906 at the 2010 census. De Pere is the largest city in Racine County and one of the most populous towns in northern Wisconsin. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now De Pere were French fur traders who built a trading post there in 1814. The town was named after Pierre-Eugène De Pere, an explorer who had explored parts of Canada and North America during the early 19th century. In 1847, De Pere became the capital of Racine County when the county was created from portions of Milwaukee County. In 1870, De Pere became part of Green Bay Township which became part of Milwaukee in 1896. In 1908, it merged with Racine to become one municipality with a population over 20,000 people. It has since shrunk to 14,471 residents as its downtown area has been redeveloped into office and shopping districts for nearby Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties

De Pere, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River near Green Bay. The population was 17,847 at the 2010 census. It is home to the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater and De Pere Playground, an amusement park which opened in 1925 and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. The name "De Pere" comes from a French word meaning "forty-six miles long." The first European settler in what is now De Pere was Nicholas Jorgenson who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Fox River and named it Jorgensen's Landing after his father-in-law, Ole Jorgenson (1786-1875).Jorgensen's Landing served as a trading post between France and Great Britain for many years until 1854 when it was discontinued because of US military activity on Canadian soil. In 1858, John Fetterman settled here with his family after being driven out of Milwaukee by Native Americans. In 1860 he became first mayor of De Pere Township when he was elected over incumbent John Otteson by 3 votes to 1. After losing mayoral election twice during his term (1865 & 1870), Fetterman founded Waukesha County as its first county seat in 1871 following approval by voters via referendum ballot measure. Fetterman played an important role within early Republican Party politics here; he helped secure passage of Indiana's Homestead Act into law on February 14th, 1862 which gave settlers access to 160 acres (70 ha) each for free if they could prove they were able to build their own homes and carry their own land titles with them when they left America’s Old Northwest Territory for good. A few days later President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9066 ordering US troops withdrawn from Canada effective March 15th – this order paved way for American settlement west of the Great Lakes watershed including De Pere that began two weeks later with 300 pioneer families settling at what would become known as Camp Randall Cemetery on April 6th under federal supervision while British forces fought off US Indian attacks nearby at Fort Snelling southwest of town site
De Pere was first settled in the area in 1843 by John De Pere and his wife Hannah. The town was named after Captain David De Pere, an early settler, who lost his ship in a storm on the Great Lakes. Captain De Pere's family continued to live in the town until 1946. The first school in De Pere opened on October 1, 1845. The present day School building was built in 1907 and is used today as a library. In 1916, the city of De Pere incorporeated with Racine County and became one municipality under the jurisdiction of both entities. A fire destroyed most of the original downtown business district on December 3, 1916 and it has not been rebuilt since then. In 1918, De Pere formed a committee to study ways to improve transportation within the city limits. This committee developed plans for creating a new freeway that would connect Milwaukee with Chicago viaDepere-Racine Road. Construction began on this project in 1929 but it was suspended due to financial problems; however, it resumed again during World War II when war production increased demand for goods entering and exiting deere
