The Coast Guard Station La Crosse was established in 1922. It is the only Coast Guard station in Wisconsin and it is one of the oldest operational units on the UW campus. The station provides law enforcement, harbor patrol, and Search and Rescue services for students, faculty, and staff at UW-La Crosse. In 1965, the Commandant of the Coast Guard District 6 became head of the La Crosse Station. In 1976, a new sonar unit was added to the station. In 1990, a helicopter unit was added to help with harbor patrols and search and rescue missions. In 1997, a boat tender unit was added to help with boating activities on Lake Michigan. In 2006, an engine room squadron was added to help with operations outside of Wisconsin’s borders. Today, the station offers many unique services that contribute to its legacy as an important part of our community in La Crosse County.

The La Crosse Coast Guard Museum has a rich history of gift giving. In 1917, the La Crosse Board of Police and Fire Commissioners decided to create a gift shop in the police department’s headquarters on State Street. The store was open for just one year, but it proved to be a success and was kept open by the board until 1951. In 1952, the La Crosse County Board of Supervisors decided that they would also want their own gift shop within their county courthouse. The first store opened in 1953 and was called the “Gift Shop of Wisconsin” because all gifts were bought here from local businesses. The store continued to be operated as a business until 1978 when it became part of the County government and is now known as the “La Crosse Coast Guard Museum Gift Shop”.

The Coast Guard provides essential services such as search and rescue, maritime safety, environmental protection, and disaster relief. In 1984, we hosted our first international Coastal Security Summit at our facility in Hampton Roads, VA. At this event we discussed ways to improve coastal security worldwide and develop new cooperative initiatives between our nations’ coast guard forces. La Crosse, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of La Crosse County. The population was 54,821 at the 2010 census, making it the fifth-largest city in Wisconsin. It is also the largest city in Northwest Minnesota. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Crosse were French traders, led by Pierre Dorion from Montreal on his expedition in 1741. A post office was established at La Crosse on January 12, 1837, and one year later, a depot was built for mail transportation between La Crosse and Chicago. The first black person to live in La Crosse was David Rodes who arrived there in 1892 as part of a group of freed slaves who had come downriver from Illinois under Union Army General Anthony Wayne's command during the war for independence. At that time most whites along the Mississippi River were Yankees or Irish Catholics while black people lived mainly on plantations outside of metropolitan areas such as New Orleans or Savannah. Baptized Charles Houghton on October 10th, 1814 at St Mary's Episcopal Church near present day downtown La Crosse - he became John Auld from Glasgow Scotland when his family immigrated to this area about 1800-1836 which is when Englishmen started settling hereabouts after their colonizing mission began some 50 years earlier with Sir George Simpson through fur trading activities ashore throughout what today would be called Milwaukee – many Scots & Irish immigrants followed suit including father (Alexander) Buchanan who came overland with two others aboard the " Prince Alfred" December 25th 1840 landing at Green Bay WI then went upriver via Marquette Pass reaching Superior August 9th 1843 thence across Superior Lake to Green Bay where he rejoin(ed)his family disembarking September 7th 1840; parents: Rev James Houghton (1785-1854) an evangelical minister born at Dunfermline Angus Scotland & wife Anne McIntosh née Lyon (1789-1856), both natives of Lanarkshire Scotland (#1 female settler). They married July 15th 1830 @ Kirkcaldy Presbyterian Church near modern day Whitehall IL having met each other prior to their arrival in what would become this land thru fur trade side business intercourse; siblings: James Houghton Jr.(1824-1907), Annie McIntosh Houghton(1827-1900& dau #2), John Auld Houghton(October 10TH 1814 - February 21ST 1888) all natives/born citizens of Scotland except youngest Alexander who died young before arriving here; youngest Alexander Buchanan born October 6TH 1830 nearpresentday Wausau WI but died there November 2ND 1850 aged 8 months old courtesy father’s sister Fannie Livingstone McNeill
