Manitowoc is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River in the town of Manitowoc. The population was 38,876 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-largest city in Wisconsin and its second most populous municipality after Milwaukee. The first European settlement in what is now Manitowoc County was by French colonists in 1795. The area became part of Wisconsin Territory when that territory was organized into a state in 1848. In 1851, Manitowoc became the county seat of that new county and remains so today. The first settler to come to what is now Manitowoc County was Pierre Chouteau, who built a cabin there around 1800. In 1834, John Fitch established himself as a land speculator in nearby Green Bay and began purchasing land east of present-day Manitowoc from Native Americans for his own farming purposes and development of townships thereon. On February 15, 1835 he laid out a town site on the south bank of the Fox River between what are now Wausau Boulevard and State Street (now North Avenue). Manitowoc is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and has been home to residents since 1838. The town was named for Nicholas Wisniewski, an American fur trader and explorer who had landed there in 1836. Manitowoc is located at 43°28′24″N 88°59′02″W / 43.31420°N 88.61890°W / -88.62630°N -87.94800°W / (43.322823, 88.623884). As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,849 people and it counted as a census-designated place (CDP) under the name "Manitowoc". The CDP covers parts of what are now Neumont, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth and Manitowoc counties in northeastern Wisconsin; Sauk County in southern Illinois; and Winnebago County in southwestern Iowa. The first permanent settler in what is now Manitowoc County was Nicholas Wisniewski from Polish immigrants who landed on July 5th 1836 at the mouth of the Menomonee River below present day's High Bridgeport Road bridge[1]. He built a log cabin nearpresent day's Appleton harbor which henamed "Newfound Landing" after his discovery of new land west of Milwaukee on April 14th 1840[2]. Newfound Landing became known as Manitowoc because early European settlers here adopted that name for their new location[3], although they may have also been called Menomonee because that is where by then Creek Indians lived[4]. When Milwaukee was founded in 1795, part of its boundaries were defined by land grants to various Native American leaders including many area natives such as Potawatomi leader Ojibwe Chief Chippewa Lake Winnebago Chief La Crosse[]5 ]. In 1837–38 Nicolas Wisniewski again explored this area when he set out from his Log Cabin on Green Bay River with three companions named John Hargrave,[6] George Noyes[]7 ], Peter Zalewski []8 ]9 ]10 ], all natives of Poland who had come overland through Canada to explore lands southward into United States Territory.[11] They journeyed about 100 miles (160 km) northwards before coming to an fork in the road which they took due east towards Nowata creek [12]). On arriving at what would become present day White Earth Junction they discoveredstream flowing southwesterly from Green Bay towards Duluth uniting withnowata creek about 8 miles (13 km) downstream along today's US Highway 16 corridor [13]. However upon reaching their destination they found no water so proceeded northeast along nowato creek until finding an open meadow 10 miles (16 km) southwest of WhiteEarth Junction where they camped for the night on October 3rd1837[/14][15][16]. On November 9th1837 François Bissonnet []17 ], captain commanding Canadian forces stationed at Green Bay under Lieutenant Colonel Pierre Dorion []18 ], started exploration northwestward across present day Racine county towards what would become Superior Lakes after hearing rumors that gold could be found thereabouts[19][20][21] but his party only made it as far as Stonington village before turning back due to strong headwinds prevailing along their route[22][23]; later that year Lt.-Colonel Pierre Dorion led another French expedition consisting principallyof Canadiens under Commandant le Baron d'Ullacourt []24 ]. After spending several weeks exploring those same waters southwest of Superior Lakeshe returned eastward via Clearwater creek []25 ]26 ]27 ) into present day Marquette county opposite Sturgeon lake[]28 ]. He reported seeing tracks leading inland from Superior Lakesand reported back favorably to Captain Bissonnet [(29)]. Arriving back at Montreal on January 27th 1830 he presented his reportto GovernorGeneral Carleton [*]30 ]. In 1836, the first white settlers in what is now Manitowoc County were led by Captain John F. Smith and his family. The area that includes present-day Manitowoc was part of the Michigan Territory when it was organized on February 14, 1837. On May 5, 1847, Wisconsin became a state and Manitowoc County was created from a portion of Winnebago County. In 1865, the town of Manitowoc was founded by General Order #10 and named for Colonel James W. Walker (1824-1895).
