The first coffee plantation was established in this town by Peter Knechtel and his brother-in-law, Johann Friedrich Schleicher. Coffee beans were grown on a small farm until 1873 when a large factory was built in Menomonie to process the beans. The first commercial grocery store opened in Menomonie in 1896. Coffee became popularized throughout America during the 1870s and 1880s, with many Americans traveling to Europe to purchase coffee. At first, coffee was sold only at pharmacies and hotels. In 1895, the first Starbucks Coffee Shop opened in Seattle, Washington. During World War I, demand for coffee increased because troops were needed to supply European allies with foodstuffs such as sugar beets and cocoa. In 1925, Menomonie became one of the initial townships within Milwaukee County when it was created from parts of Racine and Waukesha counties. In 1931, Menomonie incorporation changed its name to David Townships Incorporated (DTI). DTI began manufacturing soybeans for conversion into flour which led to an increase in local employment opportunities for people living in the townspeople’s homes near the mills where soybeans were processed. After World War II ended there was an increasing need for housing since men returning from military service had difficulty finding jobs available while new families were starting up. This increased demand caused DTI to build a number of houses between 1951 and 1957 that continued until all housing had been destroyed by fire or weather damage over time totaling $2 million dollars! In order to meet these demandsDTI began marketing its products outside of Milwaukee County beginning with distribution centers located at Green Bay (1957), Fox Point (1959), Tomahawk Point (1962), Appleton (1963), Watertown (1965) and Sheboygan Falls (1966). In 1967, DTI merged with Swift Industries Limited which made it possible for DTI Management Company Ltd., now known as Kraft Foods Inc.,to market its products through a single company selling point being longer shelf life than other brands of coffee due to their processing process of roasting whole beans not crushed like most others did previous generations
