The village was founded on July 8, 1854, by Horace Greeley and his wife Phebe Dodge Greeley. The first settler in what would become Mequon was Levi Coffin. The name "Mequon" means "a place where there are woods." In 1875, David Sanger erected a small cabin near present-day Union Bridge Road and Center Street to protest what he saw as rampant railroad corruption in the area at that time. In 1907, John Fenton built a logging mill on the Confluence River just upstream from present-day Mequon High School. That mill became an important player in the development of Mequon Village and its mills remain active today as both commercial and residential businesses. As early as 1916, local farmers had started to raise corn for export to China using water power from nearby Wisner Dam which they managed themselves with windmills until 1922 when it became state-owned and leased to turbines by Grand Western Power Company (GWP). Today's dam provides electricity fortwenty thousand homes in northern Wisconsin and southeastern Iowa while also providing environmental protection through its barrage usages which keep white oak trees alive well into their 500th year! The post office called Mequon "Plymouth" from 1870 until 1915; then "Dodge City". On October 15, 1915 - one week after World War I ended - Plymouth changed its name to Mequon afterHorace Greeley's hometown of Plymouth, Massachusetts (now Quincy). Mr. Greeley wanted his beloved Plymouth back so much that he even personally donated $1 million towards the purchase price of land which included all of what now makes up Mequon Village including most of Maple Leaf Drive/Highway K8E since this property was donated by John Fenton himself! Mequon, Wisconsin is a small town located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. The population was 5,799 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first contact between Mequon and migrants from the Great Lakes region occurred in 1834 when Andrew J. Douglass and his family came overland from Michigan via the Kettle Moraine Trail. They built a cabin on what is now Douglass Road in present-day Mequon. In 1836, Isaac Myers arrived from Illinois with his family and built a cabin near present-day Day Street in what is now Mequon Township. In 1838, John Smedley founded Smedleyville in present-day Waukesha County after coming overland from Indiana aboard the ship "John Quincy Adams". Smedleyville became one of the most important towns in central Waukesha County due to its location midway between Milwaukee and Decatur (then called Van Buren), which made it easy for traders to reach both cities. In 1841, Amos Fein purchased land east ofpresent-day Mequon from Jerusha Hecker for $5 per acre. Fein developed it into an agricultural community that grew into one of the largest centers of industry and commerce in Central Wisconsin during the 19th century. The area today known as Fein Farms was originally part of Mequon Township until 1850 when it became part of Waukesha County . A post office was established at Mequon in 1851, and remained open until 1963 . In 1870, Elijah Hocking opened a general store at what is now corner White Oak Drive and Main Street in present day Mequon township . By 1890, many other stores had closed down due to competition from railroads . By 1910 there were only six residents living on Main Street . However , by 1920 there were 150 businesses operating along White Oak Drive alone .. through 1929 there were more than 1,000 businesses operating along White Oak Drive alone ...... through 1961 there were only 10 businesses operating along Main Street .............. When Chicago annexed Racine County on November 3rd 1911 ,Mequetown lost its charter as an incorporated village ....... however , becauseof its size it remained listed on city maps until July 1969 ...... During this time Businessman Cheese Company operated out side their original building ................. finally they retired all operations inside their building .......... On October 16th 1971 marks The end Of A Era For Businessman Cheese Company As Their Building Was Purchased BY THE CITY OF RACINE AND OPERATED AS A City owned BUSINESS FROM THAT DAY ON
