When the United States Navy deployed in World War II, there was always a special bond formed between the sailors and their countries of origin. The USS Milwaukee (CVA-3) was one of the first American warships to serve in the war, and her crew enjoyed many memorable experiences. One such experience was hosting a Navy gift exchange with Great Britain. The Milwaukee’s Officers’ Club hosted an event on December 8, 1941. There were nearly 100 sailors from various boats from both navies present, as well as guests from ashore who came to enjoy some delicious British food. The exchange was very successful, with many gifts being given back and forth between the two forces. One of the most interesting things that happened during this time is that Captain Edward Sledge became friends with Commander John McCain (R-AZ), one of the leaders of Naval Forces Europe aboard HMS Birmingham (FFG-5). The captain would often drop by McCain’s office at HMNB Portsmouth to chat about naval operations in Europe. It is likely that these interactions led to budding friendships within both navies over time.

Muskego is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,641 at the 2010 census. The Muskego-area has been inhabited by the Potawatomi Nation for more than three centuries. In 1851, the United States Congress passed an act to make Muskego a town and to provide land for its development. The first settler in Muskego was John Cramer, who arrived in 1854. The town of Muskego was founded on November 15, 1851 by consent of the Potawatomi Nation. On December 12, 1851, William Fenton purchased from the Potawatomi about 1/4 mile east of present-day Muskego Township on State Route 31 what is now known as Fenton Prairie. On July 8, 1862 (the date of Wisconsin's admission into the Union), Indian agent Edward Hennepin reported that "a number" of potawatomis were living near present-day Muskego and had organized themselves into a village called Neshkoriawka or "New Town". A second report from Hennepin dated September 16 said that there were seventy-five potawatomis living within one mile of Neshkoriawka but no evidence could be found to support this claim; he ordered them removed without any further action being taken. On October 3rd 1840 white men from Green Bay hired Captain Andrew Johnson as guide and interpreter for an exploration trip upriver along the lower Mississippi River which led them to what is now Wausau county and then to Dubuque county before finally reaching Michigan Territory in 1841.(1) Johnson returned upstream with news that there were large bodies of water near present day Muskego where he named it after his employer -Muskingum River.(2) This naming continues even today as part of local geological terminology - both branches flow together below downtown Muskego at .9 miles long!(3) From here early residents likely took boat trips downriver every few weeks or so to see all sorts of interesting plants and animals they encountered! In 1835, the area that is now Muskego was first inhabited by the Winnebago Nation. The tribe had been living there for many years and their land included what is now Muskego County. In 1836, a group of loggers from Sweden began to work in the area and soon found gold mines. They were quickly followed by other miners and entrepreneurs, which led to more people moving into the county. By 1840, Muskego County had a population of around 350 people. The lumber industry was very important to Muskego County during this time and continued to be so through the early 20th century. Lumber production peaked in 1911 with over 2 million boards being produced. However, during World War I, lumber production decreased as trees were requisitioned for military purposes. From 1915-1945, agricultural production also played a large role inmuskegon County’s economy; crops such as wheat and corn were grown here while dairy products and other manufactures flourished. During some of these years there were significant social changes as well: during World War II nearly all men working in the lumber industry went into service; women started working outside of home as clerks or workers at local stores; black residents began entering white households through integration efforts (e.g., voting). These changes have helped create a more diverse cultural landscape within our county today than when they first occurred – something that has served us well over the years!
The town of Muskego was founded in 1834 by John and Sarah Morse. The town was named after the Muskoka River, which is located in that area. The first post office was opened in 1835. The population of Muskego grew rapidly during the 1800s, reaching a high of over 1,000 residents by 1850. However, the town declined during the 19th century due to economic reasons. In 1878, the towns school district was formed and Muskego began to grow again as a result. By 1900, the population had decreased to around 100 residents and it remained this way until 1959 when it increased to its current size.
